Neighbors,
On Tuesday, June 3rd, our community - especially our communities immediately surrounding the Lake and Bloomington area, witnessed a terrifying presence of local and federal law enforcement. No matter the reason for the militarized descent on Lake Street, our community does not deserve the level of fear that took root that day.
I am in communication with the Hennepin County Sheriff about the magnitude of law enforcement presence and activity earlier this week in Minneapolis and what needs to change moving forward to ensure the safety and clarity for all residents. I welcome your thoughts and feedback as I continue advocating on your behalf. To learn more about how the Hennepin County Sheriff’s department operates in situations similar to what took place Tuesday or in general, you can reach out directly to Sheriff Witt and her team.
To close the week I spent some time at our local businesses on Lake Street to buy delicious foods, I encourage supporting our local businesses along the Lake Street corridor as one of many ways to build connection among our diverse communities. However you choose to support our neighbors, the climate around safety and trust improves when we take care of one another.
As always, please reach out with questions, comments, or to learn more about how to get involved.
With Wellness,
State of the County
This years, State of the County highlighted key areas of service. As we weather a changed federal landscape, I am inspired by the nearly 10k Hennepin County Government employees who strive to improve our collective wellbeing. Shoutout to the youngest woman ever elected to the Board, Chair Fernando, for a wonderful State of the County address.
Housing and Redevelopment Authority (HRA)
As Chair of the Housing and Redevelopment Authority (HRA), I am proud to share that the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners, acting as the Housing and Redevelopment Authority (HRA), has awarded $2 million in Transit Oriented Communities (TOC) program funding to six development projects that prioritize walkable, mixed-use communities that leverage high-quality transit service.
Transit-oriented communities have wide-ranging benefits. They are more resistant to climate change, improve connections to jobs and services, and lower combined housing and transportation costs for residents. The TOC program has been a key lever in the county’s efforts to reduce disparities by race, place, and income and promote vibrant and sustainable communities.

Affordable Housing
Last month, the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners voted to approve $14.8 million for affordable housing. Together, these awards will create or preserve 1,093 affordable rental housing units and 37 affordable homeownership opportunities, opening doors to new neighbors, helping to end resident homelessness, and reducing racial disparities in homeownership.

Commissioner Communication: Age Friendly Hennepin
May was designated as Older Adults Month (OAM) at Hennepin County. I had the opportunity to share about Age-Friendly Hennepin and activities that support our older resident year-round. It is a time to recognize older adults’ contributions, highlight aging trends, and reaffirm our commitment to serving older adults.
This year’s theme is Flip the Script on Aging. Age-Friendly Hennepin is working with different organizations to bring relevant topics to their focus communities.
In May, Public Health staff were invited to discuss Age-Friendly Hennepin’s efforts and food security with LGBTQ+ older adults at Friends and Company. They also met with an older adult group at the New Hope YMCA and continued to meet with different organizations through the end of the month.
Proclamation: American Indian Month
While November is recognized nationally as Native American Heritage Month, Indigenous communities in Minnesota have also celebrated and recognized May as American Indian Month for more than 50 years.
Hennepin County strives to continually build strong connection to our American Indian communities in Hennepin. Especially in the past few years, we have been working actively with local American Indian community leaders to deepen our relationship and create more opportunities for partnership and collaboration.
Proclamation: Foster Care Month

In May, Hennepin County joined in the observance of National Foster Care Month. Our Children and Family Services staff hosted an appreciation event for foster families, including a picnic and resource fair.
As it was stated in the resolution, it takes many people working together to provide these children with love, support, and stability. I want to extend our sincerest thanks to our staff, volunteers, community partners, and especially, our foster providers.
Visit to Gale Woods Farm
Last week, I had a sweet visit to Gale Woods Farm with my colleague Kevin Anderson - Hennepin County Commissioner District 7. It’s a farm in Mound managed by Three Rivers Park District with public education at its root. It’s a great time to check out their workshops, programs and field trips for in-season farm activities!
Learn more about Gale Woods Farm here: https://www.threeriversparks.org/location/gale-woods-farm
‘Five Years Later: In Honor of George Floyd
Now on display at Hennepin History Museum: ‘Five Years Later: In Honor of George Floyd,’ a new installation presenting visual and audio material culture created by local community members in the aftermath of what was arguably the darkest moment in Hennepin County history. On display through August 2025.
Mighty Mississippi Cleanup Challenge

Hennepin County was challenged by our downstream neighbor, Goodhue County, to participate in the Mighty Mississippi Cleanup Challenge between April 15 and May 15, and we wholeheartedly accepted! We encouraged residents to join a cleanup event, which we listed on our Earth Day web page, organize their own cleanup, or sign up to Adopt-a-Drain.
About 50 cleanups and hundreds of drain cleanouts happened throughout the county during the challenge. We had results reported from 14 groups, including cities, staff groups, neighborhood groups, and nonprofit organizations. The groups that shared data and photos had about 2,800 participants and picked up over 20,500 pounds plus 100 bags of litter!
Thanks to everyone who contributed to keeping our lakes and rivers clean. See highlights from cleanups throughout the county at www.hennepin.us/earth-day
Last month, I hosted a Park and Portland Community Safety meeting. Every community member there had a thoughtful question to ask. I am grateful to have a project team that is so accessible to the community as they design improvements. As always thanks to Afro Deli for catering delicious bites.
Couldn't make it? You can still submit your feedback at hennepin.us/park-portland!
Upcoming Events:
The project team will be hosting an Open House at the end of June to inform the community of the final design concept based on the feedback received on the draft design concept.

Land Walk Tour at Roof Depot
Our team visited with EPNI last month to visualize the meaningful plans for this massive site. Converting the old roof depot into a powerful hub that will honor native stewardship and provide jobs is a transformative project that keeps winning, I am so proud to see it advance!

Nokomis East Annual Meeting
It was great to share a meal and catch up with residents at the Nokomis East Neighborhood Association’s (NENA) annual meeting. In addition to County updates, we heard about community initiatives, exciting partnerships that NENA has and reflected on highlights from the past year.
Prospect Park Annual Meeting
I had the pleasure of meeting with residents at the Prospect Park Association (PPA) annual meeting. In addition to connecting with each other we talked about the need for bicycle safety resulting from recent bridge construction, buckthorn removal, and new housing updates.
One South
Due to historical and present day disinvestment from neighborhood organizations, out of necessity neighbors are working to visualize what merging to sustain themselves might look like. I was happy to join in this critical visioning work at the One South convening last month, hosted in the Historic Coliseum Building.
East Bank Community Meeting
We had a great community meeting with the East Bank neighborhoods! Special shoutout to the U of M students who came with thoughtful questions concerning how we go about reducing our waste footprint. Special thanks to Robin Wonsley - Minneapolis Ward 2 for co-hosting and Council President Elliott Payne - Minneapolis Ward 1 for stopping by.
Coffee with Commissioner Garrison McMurtrey
With only 90 days into the job, I had the chance to grab a coffee with history-making Ramsey County Commissioner Garrison McMurtrey today! We shared our visions for our counties and shared values we bring to our roles. I loved hosting him at Wildflyer Coffee in the heart of D4.
Elliott Park Annual Social
I stopped by Elliot Park Neighborhood (EPNI)’s Annual social and left full with connections, Afro Deli, and new wisdom from our elders. EPNI does phenomenal work uplifting and taking care of neighbors. Special thanks to Hennepin Healthcare for partnering with the neighborhood and hosting the social event.
Indian Health Board of Minneapolis Ceremonial Groundbreaking
Last month, I dropped by the Indian Health Board of Minneapolis, Inc.’s ceremonial groundbreaking for its new health clinic. The spirit of the event embodied what’s to come for this space; wisdom and culturally centered healing. Investments like this are critical to holistic health in our community.
5 Year Anniversary of the murder George Floyd
May 25th marked a somber anniversary for many of us here in the district, those of us who live within a stone's throw of 38th & Chicago, and anyone around the world who was paying attention on this day 5 years ago, and its aftermath. Here's what I want you to consider:
You will, or have already seen various different takes on how things have or have not changed in our city since the social uprising that followed the brutal murder of George Floyd. You may hear things that make you feel gaslit, lied to or promised something. Let me be clear: What you feel this weekend is uniquely yours to feel. You know what you saw, you know what you experienced, you know what you were a part of. No one can take that from you. Even mentioning Mr. Floyd's name has been a political circus in some cases.
I strongly encourage you to remember his humanity and how we share that with him. I encourage you to remember that he and so many others should still be here. That he and so many others have family members who miss them terribly and love them dearly. Please also remember your own humanity and that you matter. For some of us, we're still healing, we still see those images burned into our minds of the 9 minutes it took to murder Mr. Floyd, the call to his mother, and the division that followed. The calls to "move on".
Most importantly, book deals and false promises aside, remember that the fight for justice and liberation do not end when the cameras and celebrities go away or when the sentence is handed down. We do this for our freedom. We do this with love. We do this with joy.
Rise & Remember
Over the weekend, Rise & Remember, and a host of great partners made sure that our community was filled with love, joy and remembrance. The festival was organized to commemorate the 5-Year Angelversary of George Floyd, remember all stolen lives, and continue our fight for racial healing, justice, and equity. We will never forget what happened here 5 years ago, but we will forever remain united in the fight for justice.
154th Annual Memorial Service at Pioneers & Soldiers Cemetery
This Memorial Day, we honored those who sacrificed their lives for this country. On Memorial Day, I attended the 154th annual memorial service at the Pioneers and Soldiers Cemetery on the corner of Lake St. & Cedar Ave. Today's message was uplifting the women who served and who continue to serve.
SNAP Press Conference
Make no mistake: Cutting SNAP is an attack on working families, especially in Hennepin County where 1 in 9 residents feed their families with this vital program. I used to be one of them.
I toured Community Emergency Service (CES) with U.S. Senator Tina Smith, U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar, U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar and other key stakeholders. CES is a food shelf in D4 that serves thousands each year. We saw for ourselves just how vital food security resources are to our residents.
Taking food from the poor to feed the ultra rich is gross, unethical and disturbing. As public servants we won't stand for it.
MPHA 2025 Robert B. Lewis Award
“An Elected Official who has distinguished themselves in the aggressive pursuit to establish and maintain health as a human right and to secure optimal community and personal health."
This past Monday, I received the 2025 Minnesota Public Health Association B. Robert Lewis Award. I am beyond grateful and overwhelmed to have received this award!
Our investments into birth justice, heart health and Raise the Baseline guaranteed basic income program were some components of my office’s work that were highlighted for this award. To receive this award in the memory of B. Robert Lewis is truly an honor.
