Healthy tree canopy grants available soon

Hennepin County’s healthy tree canopy grants will open for applications on Tuesday, February 25. Grant projects can include tree plantings, ash tree removals, tree inventories, outreach and more. Nonprofit organizations, schools, cities, and affordable housing properties are eligible to apply.
The grants aim to combat threats to trees from invasive insects and disease, educate the public on tree care and the importance of trees, and increase the diversity and resiliency of the tree canopy. Review the grant flyer (PDF).
Application timeline
Application documents are available now so you can start preparing your application. Applications may be submitted beginning February 25 and are due by 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 25. Registration on the Hennepin County Supplier Portal is required.
Virtual information meeting
The virtual information meeting is a chance to find out more about the grant program, hear about and share project ideas, understand the application process, and get questions answered.
The information meeting will be held virtually via Zoom from 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 5. Register for the meeting.

Grants are available for preschools, K-12 schools, colleges and universities in Hennepin County.
Grant funding can be used to support staff time for project implementation as well as to purchase equipment and supplies including recycling and organics recycling containers, sorting stations, reusable food service ware, and bulk condiment dispensers.
Round one applications due February 27
The first round of funding is available to two-year colleges, Head Start, and preschools and K-12 schools where more than 50% of students are eligible for educational benefits, such as the former free or reduced lunch program. Applications are due by 4 p.m. on Thursday, February 27. Schools may apply for up to $20,000 in the first round.
Biodiversity conservation grants for pollinator habitat
Applications are open for the National Environmental Education Foundation’s biodiversity conservation grant. This funding supports shovel-ready pollinator habitat enhancement projects. Applicants may apply for a minimum of $50,000 and a maximum of $75,000 for this one-year grant opportunity. Applications are due Saturday, March 1. The Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR) is seeking proposals for projects that contribute to young people having access and connection with the lands and waters of Minnesota, including though culturally relevant and innovative approaches. Applications are due Wednesday, March 19. Learn more and apply for LCCMR funding.
Walmart is funding local community grants for nonprofits and schools. Funds are available for projects related to community and economic development, diversity and inclusion, education, environmental sustainability, quality of life, and more. Grants range from $250 to $5,000. The deadline to apply is Sunday, June 15. Learn more and apply for a Walmart community grant.

Spring wildflowers weekend course
May 2 to 4 in the Twin Cities Metro

Osprey Wilds, in partnership with Hamline University, is offering a spring wildflowers weekend course for adults from May 2 to 4. This hands-on course will explore local plant communities, teaching you to identify wildflowers and understand their adaptations. Enjoy birdsong, blooming flowers, and biodiversity though in-person field outings in the Twin Cities Metro.

Apply to be a Minnesota GreenCorps host site

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency is accepting applications from organizations interested in hosting a Minnesota GreenCorps member for the 2025 to 2026 program year (September to August). Members serve at organizations throughout the state, completing community-focused environmental projects while gaining experience and learning green job skills.
Eligible organizations include government entities, school districts, public education institutions, and nonprofits.
