Mental health

Managing mental health is key for those with diabetes

If you have diabetes, you may hear a lot about the importance of monitoring blood sugar levels, healthy eating, regular exercise, and taking medications. But diabetes can also affect your mental health.

People with diabetes are two to three times more likely to have depression ‒ and the depression is commonly undiagnosed.

Mental health issues like depression can make it harder to stick to your diabetes care plan. When you are depressed, you may slip into unhealthy habits, stop checking your blood sugar, or even skip doctor's appointments.

Depression is more than just a bad mood. Some common symptoms of depression include:

  • Feeling sad or empty
  • Losing interest in favorite activities
  • Overeating or not wanting to eat at all
  • Not being able to sleep or sleeping too much
  • Feeling very tired
  • Feeling hopeless, irritable, anxious, or guilty
  • Having aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems

Depression is treated with therapy, medication, or a combination of both. Treatment for depression is available and safe for people living with diabetes. It can improve your quality of life and your diabetes.

Make your health care wishes known with an advance directive

We all want to have a say in our medical care, but we may not always be able communicate with our providers to due to illness, injury, or other circumstances. That’s why having an advance directive (also called a “health care directive”) is so important. It offers you peace of mind that your family and health providers will honor your preferences about life-sustaining treatments.

An advance directive is a written document you give to your health care provider in which you state your goals and wishes for current and future health care. This allows your voice to be heard when treatment decisions need to be made if you are unable to communicate them. It also enables you to name a person to make health care decisions for you if you are unable to do so.

For more information and advance care directive forms, visit:
