As we enter this season of thankfulness, we want to acknowledge the many volunteers who have been working hard in the community to educate their neighbors, complete waste projects big and small, and improve waste diversion and reduction in Hennepin County. You are a critical part of the team when it comes to reaching our residents and making lasting change.
We are sending a big, overdue thank you and congratulations to volunteers who have completed their 30-hour minimum service requirement in the past few years:
2020: Andi Hayes, Arin Arpinar, Jessica Lampert, Judith Hogan, Sarah Eigenmann
2021: Amy Sundell, Audrey Boyle, Carolyn Wieland, Christine Peter, Jessie Roelofs, Randy Klauk, Suzanne Frances
2022: Barbara Oziewicz, Cathy Gasiorowicz, Jackie Vallette-Uglow, Johanna Holub, Laurie Hanson, Maddison Kissner, Melissa Hansen, Paula Connolly, Sally Elwood
2023: Christy DePasquale, JoAnn Boraas, Karyn Penn, Kathy McCurdy, Kendra Rysan, Leanne Brown, Reed Wahlberg, Shane McCaffrey

We appreciate you and value your volunteer service with Hennepin County! We hope that your service hours have been fulfilling and welcome you to continue to use your knowledge to better the community.
With these certifications, we also want to celebrate the ongoing success of the program as we wrap up 2024. We now have a group of 158 certified Community Recycling Ambassadors, 39 of whom have been active in submitting hours this year.
Thank you everyone!
We want to highlight six individuals who have gone above and beyond to continue to submit volunteer hours many times over the required minimum.
- Cathy Gasiorowicz – over 70 hours
- Joe Gellman – over 90 hours
- JoAnn Boraas – over 90 hours
- Jackie Vallette Uglow – over 140 hours
- Kathryn Steinberger – over 140 hours
- Kathy Klink – nearly 480 hours, and a special call-out for submitting volunteer hours every* year since 2011! (*all but 2020)
We are so grateful for your continued support and commitment to the program!

Help students sort recyclables at Emerson Spanish Immersion School
This is a flexible, on-going opportunity in the Loring Park neighborhood of Minneapolis. Current CRA, Phyllis Roden, is looking to recruit others to help expand their volunteering at Emerson Spanish Immersion School. The role would be one or two days a week, helping students learn to sort recyclables during their lunch period from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. No Spanish language skills are needed. Contact Phyllis Roden (Proden53@gmail.com) for more details.

This section will feature commonly asked questions, things that have come up in discussion on the Facebook group, or other notable items to share.
Facebook question: Can a cosmetic cream glass jar be recycled?
Short answer: Unfortunately, nope!
Long answer:
"All glass is infinitely recyclable. However, in the US we only have a market for recycled food grade glass. So no; no cosmetic or perfume bottles. No vases, no window glass, no candle glass, no drinking glasses (even through that's kind of food grade but it can contaminate a whole batch.)"
"Because they are tempered differently, so they won't melt down in the recycling process."
