On Tuesday, the Hennepin County Board approved the maximum property tax levy increase of $1.046 billion for 2025 (constituting a 5.5% increase from the 2024 budget) and an operating and capital budget of $2.95 billion. The Board will continue to study and modify the 2025 Budget over the coming months, to be adopted in mid-December at our final board meeting of the year.
I hope you will join us as we dive into the county budget process between now and December. You can:
- Watch a budget hearing presentation from one of our various departments
- Join our Truth and Taxation hearing, where you can ask questions on how this impacts to you as a property owner in Hennepin county.
Budget hearing schedule, and how to take part in the 2025 budget process.
Property taxes account for roughly 36% of the overall county budget, standing up systems and programming that improve long-term outcomes for residents in the areas of education, employment, health, housing, income, justice, and connectivity. We are all touched by, and are beneficiaries of these services. As federal ARPA dollars expire this year, we have to be creative, cost-mindful, yet firm in our maintenance of essential programming, some borne out of the pandemic. I am proud to approve this budget with my colleagues.
I am also mindful of the tax burden that homeowners bear from county, city and other jurisdictional entities like parks, schools, watersheds, etc.—these add up—especially with inflation and added cost pressures right now. This is why I consistently advocate for the lowest possible property tax levy from Hennepin, while also making sure that we maintain full access and continuity of services.
“We have a financial responsibility to our residents and taxpayers,” said Commissioner Debbie Goettel, who chairs the committee in charge of the budget process. “We have been proactively preparing for the expiration of federal funding and strategically transitioning vital programs to more sustainable funding models to make sure we can continue these efforts.”

Sincerely,
Debbie Goettel

The history of Minnehaha Falls includes dance halls, secret saloons, wild behavior, lawsuits, and whiskey. Join us for a one-mile walk where the mayhem occurred: crooks, landowners, hoteliers, and saloon owners went to the Falls to turn a profit or to raise a little ruckus.
Karen Cooper, whose work When Minnehaha Flowed with Whiskey: A Spirited History of the Falls won the 2023 Minnesota Book Award for Nonfiction, gives participants further background on the people and places that shape this remarkable story. Through colorful anecdotes and thorough documentation, she helps us picture the Minnehaha Falls area in a new light, and helps us understand how this history formed the park we know and love today.
This tour begins at the picnic table in front of the Longfellow House, 4800 S Minnehaha Dr, Minneapolis, and is approximately one mile on uneven ground. Please wear comfortable shoes, bring sunscreen/protective clothing, dress for the weather, and bring your own water to stay hydrated. Please register in advance.
