My best,

Hennepin County was presented an award for the most well-attended clean-up event during the 2024 Mighty Mississippi Cleanup Challenge. In total, we had close to 600 people attend our cleanup events, which resulted in roughly 12,830 pounds of trash collected. Thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s challenge, and special thanks to Goodhue County for hosting!
Power Restoration Continues
Power restoration continues in the Twin Cities Metro areas after severe storms rolled through over the last week.
Residents should note that brush, tree limbs and debris resulting from outage restoration or an emergency tree trim will be left on the property for the owner to dispose of — check out information on yard waste disposal in Hennepin County here.
A webpage has been set up on xcelenergy.com, along with a banner on the MN and WI pages. Customers can follow this page for updates.
Stay away from downed power lines – always assume an electric line, even one on or near the ground is energized and therefore dangerous.
Homeowners to check for damage to the electric service mast to their home. If damaged, a licensed electrician must make repairs before service can be restored.
17 Healthy Tree Canopy Grants Awarded
Hennepin County recently awarded 17 Healthy Tree Canopy grants totaling nearly $434,000. Grant projects will take place in eight cities, on two affordable housing properties, at three schools, and through five nonprofit organizations, including congregations and neighborhood associations.
Grant funding will be used for a variety of activities, including conducting tree inventories, expanding the capacity of city forestry teams, treating and replacing or replanting ash trees, and educating residents on the benefits of trees and engaging them in tree planting efforts. More than 920 trees will be planted or treated through the grant projects.
The grants will improve livability and reduce disparities by planting trees in areas experiencing disproportionate amounts of economic, environmental, and health inequities. The grants will also protect people and increase the county’s resilience to climate change by increasing the benefits that trees provide.

The Environmental Response Fund (ERF) helps revitalize sites by providing funds to assess and clean up contamination. The grants reduce barriers to site improvement or redevelopment caused by the added costs of environmental cleanup and lessen the risk to human health and the environment posed by the contamination. Many ERF grants address environmental contamination in communities with significant disparities in health, including low-income areas and communities of color. Some of these sites become catalysts for new development in neighboring areas, which can help address racial disparities in housing, employment, and income.
To maximize collaboration between funders, the timing of the ERF grant round coincides with additional contamination cleanup grant programs administered by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development and the Metropolitan Council. Four applications were recommended for award, two of which are located in District 3.

Hennepin County Public Health is continuing to hold free childhood vaccination clinics for community members. These clinics have been on-going since this past spring and are scheduled until October. With the current measles outbreak, there may be more being added. Find the up-to-date list of clinics at hennepin.us/immunizations.
We are also in the middle of a paid campaign promoting these clinics and the MMR vaccine which prevents measles. Our campaign consists of radio ads hosted by multilingual radio stations, web and social media advertisements, flyers and more. All of our advertisements are in English, Spanish and Somali. Attached are some of the graphics and flyers we have created for our Facebook, and promotion of our clinics.
