Hennepin County Board Chair Irene Fernando gives the 2024 State of the County Address.
On April 5, we had an opportunity to come together as a collective of diverse community members, county staff, board members, administration, and department leadership for the yearly "State of the County" address, offered by Hennepin County Board Chair Irene Fernando. She is the youngest and the first non-white commissioner to serve in this important leadership role in Hennepin County's 172 year existence. This is no small ceiling she broke through
I and am honored to serve as Vice Chair to the board in this historic moment to support and grow her leadership. While listening to her address, we were all struck by the amazing strides that we have made as a county to address disparities across all of our lines of business, including: education, employment, health, housing, income, justice, and transportation. Undoubtedly we have much work left to do, but I am hopeful for the future of Hennepin County as we address our gaze towards our most underserved communities, and work towards developing nation-leading, innovative programming to improve people's lives, no matter our background.
If you missed it, I encourage you to watch the address online to learn more about the important work that Hennepin County does every day in service to our 45 municipalities and 1.3M residents.
Sincerely,
Hennepin County Board Vice Chair, Debbie Goettel

I love meeting with and supporting new entrepreneurs in Hennepin County. Last week, I joined "pitch night" with the current cohort of Hennepin's "CEO Start" program. The innovation we see in the South Metro (and across the entire county) is astounding. It's this drive to create and build that makes our local economy so robust — and essential — to the entire region and state. 51% of jobs in the metro are located here in Hennepin County.
CEO Start is a 10-week group-learning opportunity that prepares aspiring and existing entrepreneurs with insights, relationships, and tools to turn their ideas into viable businesses.
We are proud to fund CEO Start, as it is part of our ongoing efforts to redefine the relationship between government and business and invest in new strategies to make Hennepin County a great place to start and grow a business.

Homebuyers can now qualify for assistance to make a down payment on their first home in Hennepin County.
In collaboration with Hennepin County, NeighborWorks Home Partners launched a down payment assistance program for residents buying homes in Hennepin County. This program started on March 4, and is estimated to be available through 2025.
The Hennepin County Housing and Redevelopment Authority (HCHRA) created and designed the Homebuyer Assistance Program to reduce racial disparities in homeownership. As the program administrator, NeighborWorks Home Partners will provide down payment financing of up to $30,000 to assist buyers interested in purchasing a home to have as their principal place of residence in Hennepin County.
The HCHRA is funding the downpayment assistance program through its first designated fund for homeownership assistance. Find more information at the Homeownership Assistance Program page.

The first Earth Day in 1970 mobilized millions of Americans to demand action and launch the modern environmental movement. Since then, Earth Day has evolved into the largest civic event on the planet, activating billions of people each year to care for the environment and take action for a brighter future.
Achieving our zero-waste and climate-action goals will require a lot of different people putting their interests, skills, talents, and connections to work in a lot of different areas. Here are some ways the county is taking action and ideas for getting involved this Earth Day so you can find an opportunity that works for you!

We’re about to enter road construction season. And, just like every season, this year's includes a number of projects on county roads.
You will be seeing crews on site across the county working to improve accessibility, provide better safety for people using all modes of transportation, updating infrastructure and making sure our roads and bridges can continue to keep people connected to the places where they live, work, play, learn, shop and take care of themselves.
Check out what’s happening across the county or zoom into your district to see what’s happening closer to you. To learn more about each project, just click on the line or dot on the map.
