The first Earth Day in 1970 mobilized millions of Americans to demand action and launch the modern environmental movement. Since then, Earth Day has evolved into the largest civic event on the planet, activating billions of people each year to care for the environment and take action for a brighter future.
Achieving our zero-waste and climate-action goals will require a lot of different people putting their interests, skills, talents, and connections to work in a lot of different areas. This year for Earth Day, the county is sharing what we are doing and how everyone can get involved in key areas: cleaning up and protecting lakes, rivers, and streams, achieving a zero-waste future, planting and caring for trees, learning and connecting in our communities, conserving energy and switching to renewable energy, and getting around sustainably.
Learn what we are doing and how you can be part of the solution to find an opportunity that works for you! Explore upcoming events and cleanups on our Earth Day and Arbor Day events map.

In an effort to keep food out of the trash and keep cash in consumers’ pockets, Hennepin County is launching the Trash or Cash campaign to help people learn ways to save money by not wasting food.
The first phase of the campaign includes:
- A new website, trashorcash.org, where residents can learn more about this issue and pick up some tricks and tips for buying the food they need and eating the food they have.
-
Sign up for weekly Fridge Check Friday emails, which will include tips and reminders to help people save money by wasting less food
-
Fridge Check Guide that walks people through how to choose cash over trash by making simple changes to how they plan, store, and cook.
The second phase launching later this spring will include game show video segments, paid advertising, and a partnership with local chefs.

This year, residents in several Hennepin County cities have experienced a change to their curbside organics recycling program. To help get more information out to residents, we partnered with cities to send a mailer to all households in Brooklyn Park, Brooklyn Center, Crystal, Eden Prairie, Long Lake, Maple Grove, Minnetonka, New Hope, and Rogers.
If you live or volunteer in any of these cities, keep an eye out for your mailer and review our organics recycling page to be prepared for questions when you are volunteering.
