We’re excited to help you be part of the solution to create a world with less plastic!
The Plastic-Free Challenge, which runs through the end of February, will help you increase your understanding of plastics and plastic waste, uncover opportunities to cut back on the amount of plastic you bring into your home, and provide support and motivation to make lasting change at home and in your community.
During the challenge, we will send three short emails per week to provide you with resources and tips for action and building habits. Each week will dig into a different plastic-free category.
Before we get started, here are some tips to make the most of your experience.
Now that the challenge has started, remember to take a few moments to set up your dashboard.
- Add a profile picture, profile banner image, and mission statement.
- Post a message to the feed about how you're feeling at the start of the challenge.
- Recruit additional participants to join you. See the information in the resources section for tips on leading a team (PDF) and a media kit (DOCX) with resources to help you spread the word and encourage others to join.
- Browse the categories and actions – the challenge has more than 80 actions to choose from!
- Commit to actions by selecting up to five one-time actions and five daily actions to work on during the four-week challenge. You get points for each of these actions.
- Log in regularly to report what actions you take, see the impact of your actions add up, encourage your team members, and interact with others in the feed.
See our tips for getting started with the Plastic-Free Challenge (PDF) for more information.
How the actions are set up
For this Plastic-Free Challenge, you have more than 80 actions to choose from in eight categories. Let’s take a look at how the actions are set up:
-
Action title: This is the action
-
Description: This tells you more about what you would commit to doing to complete the action. Some actions include a spot for you to add a quantity to tailor the action when you select it.
-
Learn more: Click this button to see additional external resources related to the action.
-
Select: Click this button to select (or deselect) an action. You can change your mind throughout the challenge, just know you will lose any impact made from deselected actions after the challenge starts.
-
Daily or one-time action: This describes the frequency of the action. One-time actions are investments or changes you commit to making long-term, while daily actions are choices you make more often – it could be every day, every few days, or a few times during the challenge – to build habits.
-
Challenge level: This is a difficulty rating of the action and is represented by the bars at the bottom of an action. Learner is easiest, Pro is in the middle, and Leader is most advanced.

How to choose your actions
You can select up to five daily actions and five one-time actions to work on during the challenge.
Browse through the categories (At Home, Food, On-the-go, etc.) to check off the actions you already take and filter the actions in each category by difficulty or frequency to find the ones that would be the most realistic and impactful for you and your household.
Have you completed this challenge before? Recommit to actions that you may have stopped doing, select something you didn’t try last year, or take a step up in leadership as a team captain! You can recruit others and provide advice based off your past experience.
Enjoy the ride!
We know that change can be both challenging and fun, and we encourage you to embrace your journey. Creating change is steady work, but simple, everyday actions made by many people can add up to big impacts and a better future.
