January Look Back
On January 3rd, 2023, I was sworn in to my second term as the Commissioner of the 4th District of Hennepin County. These next four years are dedicated to my late father- may he rest in peace. Serving you all has been an incredible experience and I look forward to continuing in this work. We hit the ground running and on January 24th, 2023, our Board moved to recognize January as Stalking Awareness Month in Hennepin County; because no one should have to live in fear. I thank the hard work of my residents as this wouldn't have been possible without my constituents, who brought this proclamation idea to our office.
February Look Back
In February, our team attended the National Association of Counties (NACo) legislative conference in Washington, D.C., where we meet with our federal partners. During the conference, I met and advocated for our Hennepin County priorities including affordable housing, dignified and low barrier shelters, transportation, and public health. And to top it all off, I had the privilege of meeting with the U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Secretary Marcia Fudge- pictured in purple above.
May Look Back
The Board proclaimed May as Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month in Hennepin County. We were joined by fellows of the Asian Council of Young Political Leaders' Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative. It's been heartwarming to be able to set this precedent of County support for our Asian community members and staff. A big thank you to Chair Fernando, District 2, for introducing this resolution!
June Look Back
In June, I was appointed to Governor Tim Walz and Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan's Children's Cabinet. Social Service is my life's work and with my background in social work, I have been deeply invested in helping shape improvements of services of care for our young ones and their families.
July Look Back
In July, I had the privilege of attending NACo's Annual Conference in Austin, TX. During the conference, I learned how counties are reducing recidivism after incarceration. Our own Sheriff Dawanna Witt talked about how Hennepin's investment in behavioral health has reduced the number of people coming into jails who shouldn't be there in the first place. I also I joined over 100 other County Commissioners to tour dignified responses to homelessness; and I connected with other elected officials and staff who are working to improve service delivery and resident success.
August Look Back
August was a fun month! My kiddos and I kicked off the month by playing with llamas at a Franklin Library community event. Libraries are so crucial as community spaces that foster child and adult creativity and curiosity; and in this day and age, I'm glad we continue to see residents out and engaged!
And with August being National Black Business Month, I was out in the district supporting Black owned businesses by getting some fantastic services and goods and learning how they've come to be. Thank you for welcoming us The Dripping Root, Onyx Coffeehouse, Rebecca's Bakery and Cafe, and Nature's Syrup!
October Look Back
In October, I met with a Southside foundational institution that's been in District 4 for decades, Circle of Discipline. In 2023, Circle of Discipline partnered with a Northside foundational institution, The Link to work to provide housing supports, mentoring, drop-in services, and much more to support our youth's needs.
October was also an important month for me, as our Board passed my $1 million funding request to authorize public health efforts to support heart health and diabetes health among Hennepin County residents- specifically Black and Indigenous women. The investment of this money is going to care coordination, promotion, outreach, community supports, and public vascular and diabetes health in 2024. See below for more on what lead me to make this needed investment.

End of the Year Look Back
In November and December our Board and staff worked hard to pass our $2.6-billion-dollar budget that reflects our priorities in housing, climate, resident services, and disparity reduction.

An Office Welcome
What a better way to kick off the new year than by welcoming our new Director of District Engagement, Katelynn Ogunfolami (pictured middle).
Katelynn joins us from our Intergovernmental Relations (IGR) Department where she has been the Policy Aide to our IGR team- with her portfolio focused primarily on Health and Human Services and Housing. Katelynn has been working for over 2 years in that work and has helped pass our Basic Sliding Fee Reprioritization; fought for needed taxation, public health, and child wellbeing considerations in cannabis legalization; and advocated for needed Hennepin housing and shelter system funding.
Now as she joins the District 4 office, we are excited to be more engaged with residents through community events, continued constituent support services, and a plethora of other new opportunities to come.
Welcome Katelynn!
Hennepin County 2024 Delegation Meeting
This year my colleague, District 1 Commissioner Jeff Lunde, and I are again IGR Co-chairs; and January continued strong with our annual Hennepin County Delegation meeting. We took our priories to the state level, and a number of state legislators joined us as we shared the 2023 priorities we accomplished, while showcasing our 2024 priorities and asking for our Hennepin Delegations legislative support. A special thank you to our Delegation Co-Chairs Representative Esther Agbaje and Senator Kelly Morrison!
