The County board finalized and adopted the 2024 county budget last week. Below is a high-level recap, and you'll find a detailed budget report here.
In early 2024, be on the lookout for my 2023 Year-in-Review letter in which I detail programmatic highlights and accomplishments from the last year, in District 3 and county-wide. In the letter I also preview the year ahead.

My office spends these last weeks meeting with constituents and wrapping up on committee work. As 2024 approaches, I wish you all the happiness and renewal that the season promises.

Operating Budget
The county’s operating budget funds the day-to-day services for residents, like plowing roads, library services and providing support for vulnerable residents. The operating budget funds expenses for delivering these services, including employee pay and benefits.
The operating portion of the 2024 budget totals $2.3 billion, a decrease of 0.2% or $5.4 million dollars from the adjusted 2023 budget.

Capital Budget
The capital budget includes investment in infrastructure like roads, transportation and buildings to meet current and future needs. The capital portion of the 2024 budget totals $342.4 million, which is $118 million less than the 2023 adjusted capital budget. The 2023 capital budget finances projects such as:
- The METRO Blue Line Light Rail Extension
- Assessing and maintaining roads, bridges, and trails
- Investment in environment and energy infrastructure
- Investment in Public Safety and Judiciary facilities and infrastructure
Budget Process
The board approved the 2024 budget after more than nine months of preparations and hearings.
Most recently, the board held the annual Truth in Taxation hearing on November 28, and made final budget amendments on December 7. Learn more on the Hennepin County budget webpage.
