Hennepin County Sheriff's Office and Hennepin County Library System Announce Annual Cold Weather Drive

November 15, 2023 (Minneapolis) - The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) has today launched its annual cold weather item donation drive. HCSO is collecting donations of new or gently used cold weather items for distribution to individuals in need, including homeless and unsheltered individuals in Hennepin County. As with last year’s drive, HCSO is excited to partner with the Hennepin County Library system to make donation sites easily accessible.

Donated items will be distributed through various means, including through the HCSO Community Engagement Team and directly to individuals visiting the homeless outreach center at the Minneapolis Central Library, 300 Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis, MN 55401. Cold weather items may also be provided to individuals leaving jail or court hearings without adequate clothing, or anyone in else in need that HCSO or Hennepin County Library employees encounter in the course of their duties.

Items being requested include new or gently used coats, hats, mittens, boots, and scarves; new socks, and disposable hand/foot warmers. HCSO requests that individuals do not donate used items that require extensive cleaning or repair.

HCSO will accept donations from November X through February 28. The date of the donation drive may be adjusted based on weather and need.

Donations of new or gently used cold weather items may be donated at drop boxes placed at the locations below. The Sheriff’s Administration can also accept donated items by mail.

“Our annual cold weather item donation drive is part of the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office’s commitment to public safety and community wellness for everyone,” said Sheriff Dawanna Witt. “In Minnesota, where cold weather is simply a fact of life, no one should be without the things they need to be comfortable and safe. We appreciate the public’s ongoing willingness to help those who need it, and we are thankful for our partnership with the Hennepin County Library to help us reach as many people as possible.”

“The library is committed to the well-being of our community,” said Hennepin County Library Director Scott Duimstra. “We’re excited to continue this partnership with the Sheriff’s Office and help connect residents with county services that will keep them safe and warm this winter.”
