Hennepin County Sheriff's Office Issues Statement on In-Custody Death
September 18, 2023 (Minneapolis) - On Monday, September 18, 2023, a 21-year-old male in custody at the Hennepin County Jail suffered a medical incident in the jail’s medical room while being attended to by nursing staff. Medical aid was immediately rendered by staff and responding paramedics and fire department personnel. Life-saving measures continued during transport to Hennepin County Medical Center where he was ultimately pronounced deceased.
“I was saddened to hear of the death of an individual in our custody today, and my thoughts are with that person’s family and friends,” said Sheriff Witt. "While events like this are difficult to process, I am thankful for the actions of my staff and those of our partners, all of whom acted compassionately and decisively in their effort to administer life-saving measures.”
Further details on cause of death will be released by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner. The family has been notified and the incident is under investigation.
