Hennepin County Sheriff Statement re American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Lawsuit
June 30, 2023 (MINNEAPOLIS) - Below is a brief factual clarification from the Hennepin County Sheriff regarding a recent lawsuit filed by the ACLU on behalf of plaintiff Kylese Perryman.
Sheriff Witt states, “Facial recognition technology was not used in the criminal case referenced in the lawsuit by Mr. Perryman. In general, this technology can be used to provide investigative leads, which is ultimately corroborated with other investigative information. Facial recognition is not used by the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office as a sole source for positive identification or probable cause to arrest.”
The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office has highly trained analysts who are aware of the parameters for use of facial recognition technology. Although they assisted the Bloomington Police Department with attempting to identify the suspect in the criminal case referenced in the lawsuit, facial recognition technology was not used in those attempts.
