Friends,

I hope you enjoyed the long Memorial Day weekend - it feels like we’ve officially turned the corner into Minnesota summer weather! This week I visited Ridgedale Library for the Oaks, Fire, and Climate Change event, hosted by Friends of Minnetonka Parks. I heard from pollinator conservationist, author, and local resident Heather Holm about the importance of Minnetonka’s historical oak ecosystems and the impact we can have on our climate if we work to restore these ecosystems. Thanks to Friends of Minnetonka Parks for hosting this event!

🌱 Oaks, Fire, and Climate Change event in Minnetonka

Oaks 1

Incredible turnout at the Ridgedale Library on Wednesday night for the Oaks, Fire and Climate Change event hosted by Friends of Minnetonka Parks.

We learned about the unique role that Minnetonka's fragile oak ecosystems have played historically and the role they continue to play in securing a more resilient future. Of particular interest are the important efforts underway, led by Friends of Minnetonka Parks, City of Minnetonka, Hennepin County Government, and many more to protect and preserve these national treasures.

Special thanks to Heather Holm for your informative presentation and to all of the incredible volunteers to make this work possible.

🌳 Healthy Tree Canopy Grants

Tree Canopy Grants

Healthy Tree Canopy Grants are available to cities, affordable housing properties, schools, and non-profit organizations to enhance the county’s tree canopy.

The goals of the program are to combat threats to trees from invasive insects and disease by funding tree planting, educate the public on tree care and the importance of trees, and increase the diversity and resiliency of the tree canopy.

Applications for the 2023 round of Healthy tree canopy grants will be accepted via the Hennepin County supplier portal and are due by Thursday, June 8.

🎨 Hennepin County Library: New Cargill Gallery Exhibit

ROHO Collective

“Our Souls Shine Bright” is a multimedia group exhibition from the ROHO Collective that illuminates the cultural experiences of artists of color. Featuring paintings, drawings, sculpture, and photography, the show shares a united artistic voice that speaks to the emotion and required endurance of life post-pandemic and following the social uprisings of recent years. With works by both professional and emerging Twin Cities artists, the exhibition invites the community to an experience of connection, unity, liberation, and imagination.

This exhibition will be on display at the Cargill Gallery, located on the second floor of Minneapolis Central Library, from June 5-July 27, 2023.

Can local volunteer popups fix it? Yes, they can

By: Jennifer Brooks, Star Tribune

May 13, 2023

"One by one, neighbors carried the broken things of Hennepin County into the Fix-It Clinic.

A burnt-out toaster. An old typewriter. A hair dryer on the fritz. A sewing machine with a wonky bobbin. Hopeful owners crowded into a makeshift workshop in a Robbinsdale church, bearing broken vacuum cleaners, splintered sculptures, snow blowers and stand mixers. Someone lugged an entire screen door into the room — the last stop before garbage day for some of these objects."
