The 2023 legislative session is a wrap! I was honored to spend multiple days at the Capitol this session to help negotiate additional transportation funding alongside Commissioner Greene. I also testified in front of the Judiciary and Public Safety, and Elections committees. The most fun part of it all was having several productive conversations about county priorities with our legislators.
Here are some of the legislative highlights that we're excited about here in Hennepin County:
- Tackling homelessness received incredible attention this session. From the Family Homelessness Prevention & Assistance Program to the Pathway Home Act, and then housing bills within the Omnibus bill, millions of dollars have been allocated to helping residents in Minnesota & Hennepin County find and keep their housing.
- Transportation funding is always a priority in Hennepin County. The bonding bill includes $79M for the Local Road Improvement Program and $67M for Local Bridge Replacement Program. Hennepin County will be receiving significant funding for new road projects as well.
- We are very happy with the additional funding for mental health support. This includes $15M for the embedded social worker program and $3M for crisis mental health workers.

Earlier this month, my kids and I stopped by K9 Zoro's retirement party. The Hennepin County Sheriff's Department partnered with No Dog Left Behind Rescue to not only celebrate Zoro and his service, but to help homeless dogs and puppies find forever homes. Happy retirement, Zoro!
Our staff was thrilled to be given a tour of a tree planting site in our district. They spoke with staff from multiple Hennepin County departments to learn more about their work and even planted a few trees!
