Friends,

More exciting developments around the future of two key District 6 libraries (Southdale and Westonka) in this week’s newsletter—and we want to hear from you! With projects to rebuild both of these libraries starting to get underway, Hennepin County is now taking public feedback about the Westonka and Southdale Libraries. I encourage you to take a few minutes to respond to a brief survey with your ideas and insights.

As I discussed in recent newsletters about the Library Strategic Plan, Hennepin County is committed to ensuring that library services remain a vital and valuable resource for residents for years to come. You and your feedback are a crucial part of that process!

📚 Southdale Library Survey

Exterior of Southdale Library

Last week, I shared about the Westonka Library Survey. This week, the Southdale Library survey is now open and we need your feedback for this one too! In a short, 5 minute survey, we’d love to hear how you use the library and how to best make improvements as we move forward with renovations.

Planning for a new Southdale Library building began in 2015, was paused in 2020, and resumed in 2023. Hennepin County will build a new library on the existing site.

Southdale continues to be one of the busiest libraries in the Hennepin County system:

  • 4th most visited library in the Hennepin County system, welcoming approximately 185,000 visitors in 2022
  • 6th highest volume of physical checkouts, more than 250,000 first-time checkouts in 2022
  • 7th highest volume of Wi-Fi connections, more than 225,000 sessions in 2022
  • 2nd highest in information counts, second only to Minneapolis Central Library

Hopkins ACE infographic

Are you, or someone you know, interested in a summer internship? The ACE Program is a youth employment program that offers young people ages 16-24 paid summer internship and professional development experience. Participants are able to explore a variety of careers within the cities of Hopkins and Minnetonka to build and grow their professional and leadership skills.

The paid eight-week internship will allow young adults to work in one of the Hopkins City departments, including Community Development and Inspections, Administration and Finance, Police, Fire, Public Works, the Hopkins Center for the Arts, and the Hopkins Activity Center.

The program is partially grant funded and focuses on meeting the needs of youth traditionally under-represented in the workforce, so visit the link below to learn more about the program and your eligibility:

Minneapolis nonprofit works to deconstruct — rather than demolish — old buildings

Cathy Wurzer and Ellen Finn, MPR News

April 25, 2023

"In much of the state, the snow has melted, the ground has thawed and you know what that means: It’s the beginning of construction season!

That also means demolishing old buildings to make way for those new construction. But back in 2020, Hennepin County became one of the first counties in the nation to offer ‘green grants’ for deconstruction, an alternative to demolishing a building."
