The votes are in! The Master Recycler/Composter program will be rebranding as Community Recycling Ambassadors. Thank you to everyone who submitted a name idea and voted.
We requested name ideas from residents and held a public vote on the final name selection to incorporate the opinions of both current volunteers and those who interact with volunteers.
We received 190 votes, with the Community Recycling Ambassador option receiving 54.2% of first choice votes:
Why the change?
The county decided to change the name of this program to help make it more inclusive and to better reflect the role these volunteers play in our community.
The word “master” has negative associations with plantation slavery in the U.S. We are moving away from its use because the county is committed to confronting racism, creating systems that build equity, and creating a future where all residents thrive. The program name “Community Recycling Ambassadors” better reflects Hennepin County’s efforts to reduce racial disparities and serve all residents, in all areas, including waste reduction and recycling.
What happens now?
Staff will begin working immediately to update all webpages and resources with the new name. This will take some time, so you may see both the new and old name for a while.
The volunteer hours reporting form has been updated to reflect the name change. Please save the new link and begin using it to report your volunteer hours. The website link will stay the same for now.
Program operations and classes will keep the same format. We do ask that you begin referring to yourself as a Community Recycling Ambassador when volunteering with the public. Updated nametags and tabling resources will become available in the new year as they are developed.
