Celebrating Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month

September 15 – October 15 is National Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month in Hennepin County! There are numerous ways you can celebrate and honor this like supporting your local Hispanic and Latino businesses or attending a community event.

Some events happening in Hennepin County include:

Hennepin County makes it easy to catch up on childhood immunizations

children

Childhood immunizations protect kids and families from serious diseases like COVID-19, measles, mumps, and diphtheria. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, childhood immunization rates have fallen in Minnesota and nationally.

Hennepin County has programs to help families get their children caught up on all immunizations. Programs are available, even if families are uninsured, underinsured, or don’t have a primary care clinic. The county also helps families connect to services not run by Hennepin County.

Visit the county’s childhood immunization website, hennepin.us/immunizations for information on available programs. Or call Hennepin County Public Health at 612-348-8900. Help is available in English, Spanish, Somali, and Hmong.

Have a say in how healthy Hennepin can be

Every four years, Hennepin County’s SHAPE survey asks residents questions about their health, diet, exercise, neighborhood, and ability to get health care. If you get the 2022 SHAPE survey in the mail or at a community event, please take it! Your answers are anonymous and confidential and will help us identify the most important health needs of people who live in Hennepin County. Learn more: hennepin.us/shape

Hennepin County is offering monkeypox testing and vaccination

If you develop a rash (bumps, sores, or blisters) and are worried that you might have monkeypox (MPX) or believe you have been exposed to it, contact your primary health care provider. If you don’t have a primary health care provider, you are welcome to call Hennepin County’s Red Door Clinic at 612-543-5555. Note: providers can only test for MPX if a rash is present.

Hennepin County’s Red Door Clinic is also offering vaccination for people at highest risk for MPX infection, including men who have sex with men, people who have been exposed to MPX, and other risk factors. Please call the clinic at 612-543-5555.

For more information about MPX, including symptoms, harm reduction, and managing symptoms, visit reddoorclinic.org/monkeypox

It was a highlight to welcome U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Marcia L. Fudge to Minneapolis! We met at the Elliot Twins to exemplify how funding from HUD and interagency effort allows developments like this one to stay deeply affordable for tenants and prevent displacement.

Transit

Secretary Pete Buttigieg came to Minnesota to visit Hennepin County and tour our very own Lake Street to see first hand how the $12 million grant from his Transportation Department will greatly improve and make safer the corridor, just in time for the expansion of the B Line Bus Rapid Transit! The Lake Street corridor is home to hundreds of local businesses.
