To wrap up week one’s focus on planning, we are going to discuss ways to keep track of the food you buy.
Start with what you have
One easy way to prevent wasted food is to simply be aware of what you have and use that first. Know what is in your freezer, pantry, and refrigerator while you create your meal plan and before you go out (or online) to grocery shop.
|
Just like with meal planning, you can keep your inventory on paper or use digital tools.
Keep a written inventory inside a pantry door or on the outside of the refrigerator to see what you have at a glance. Download free printable sheets from I Value Food or Shelf Cooking to get you started.
Or go digital and try a food inventory app such as Cooklist, Pantry Check, Cozzo, or Foodkeeper. These apps let you keep mobile lists and include helpful perks like “use it up” reminders, shelf-life estimates, and item pricing.
Consider using your kitchen inventory to create a reverse grocery list, where you start with what you have to make sure you don't buy duplicates.

If you’re planning to focus on keeping track of the food you have, choose these actions in the planning category:
- Keep a food inventory
- Try a food tracking app
