June Newsletter from Hennepin County Commissioner Kevin Anderson

commissioner kevin anderson news from district 7

June 2022

This month, the county presented its 2022 state of the county to the employees and residents of the county. This year’s theme focused on housing services and work that we have been able to plan for and complete due to federal funds and county investments. If you would like to watch this year’s address or read the transcript, you can visit https://www.hennepin.us/stateofthecounty. While there are many issues that are on the minds of our residents, know that our office is always open for anyone who would like to meet with us or have questions and concerns.

With the all the great work we have been doing at the county level, I wanted to ensure people that Hennepin County remains a steadfast beacon within our state during these times of national change. We have been an advocate for Gun Violence Prevention with our $5 million dollar investment in 2021 and an additional $5 million this year to support local groups that worked to reduce gun violence through a holistic approach. These organizations worked within their own communities to provide programing for youth, violence interruption services, and neighborhood revitalization efforts.

We are also providing many services for women and families through Hennepin Health Care such as pregnancy screenings, family planning, and gynecologic care as well as health and nutrition care through our Woman and Infant Children’s (WIC) program. Hennepin County in partnership with Commissioner Angela Conley (District 4) authored at $10 million of American Rescue Plan dollars to support mothers in our Black and Indigenous mothers in Hennepin County. This issue is prevalent throughout the U.S., and in Minnesota. While county-level data on maternal mortality is currently lacking, national data indicates that the number of reported pregnancy-related deaths has steadily increased from 7.2 deaths per 100,000 live births in 1987, to 17.3 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2017.

Our office stands by the idea that everyone should live in a healthy and safe community with access to opportunities and services that meet the need of all residents.

Thank you to John Duffy and Duffy Development Co for giving my office a tour of the 3rd addition of Bottineau Ridge located near the Shops at Arbor Lakes in Maple Grove. This development provides housing to lower income residents and has floorplans ranging from one bedroom up to four bedrooms.

Celebrating the Ribbon Cutting and ground breaking of MAC-V's Latest Project

MAC-V

On June 14th I was able to celebrate with the Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans a joint ribbon cutting and ground breaking in North Minneapolis. The site of the ground breaking was one of the four tax forfeited land parcels Hennepin County Government Housing & Redevelopment Authority sold to MAC-V earlier this year.

A similar house / accessory dwelling unit combination as the site of the ribbon cutting will be built on the site of today’s ground breaking. Congratulations to everyone who made it possible to house additional veterans experiencing homelessness in Hennepin County!

Zero Waste Plan Work Groups

Hennepin County is seeking community members and subject matter experts to participate in work groups to develop actions for the Zero Waste Plan.

Work groups are based on seven themes identified from community and industry stakeholder engagement in the first phase of the project. Each work group will:

  • Learn about Hennepin County’s solid waste system and the challenges and opportunities to achieving zero waste
  • Review and propose strategies that will accelerate the county’s path to zero waste.
  • Finalize recommended strategies for inclusion in the county’s Zero Waste Plan.

The goal is to have at least six members on each work group that includes a balance of county residents, industry/organization stakeholders, and other recycling experts.

Participating in a work group will take 10 to 15 hours of total time between mid-July to late August, including 4 meetings and some work between meetings.

People interested in joining work group can learn more about the process and register.
