Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Did you know Hennepin County has an annual county fair? That’s right! Since 1907 this event has offered folks from across the region our very own version of the great Minnesota get-together. In fact, the fair was housed in Hopkins until the 1980s.

The Hennepin County Fair is currently held at the Corcoran Lions Park, in Corcoran. Check it out this weekend from June 17 to 19, and make sure to stop by the 4H tent to check out the different exhibits. I hope to see you there!

History of the Hennepin County Fair

Since 1907 the annual Hennepin County Fair has offered folks from across the region our very own version of the great Minnesota get-together. In fact, the fair was housed in Hopkins until the 1980s, including the Opera Hall (now housing the Mainstreet Bar and Grill) and between 11th and 12th Avenues (now home to the Hopkins Cinema) and even expanding into the area we now know as Central Park.

It has been a while since the Hennepin County Fair has called Hopkins home. Still, the rich tradition of many years of celebration and exposition at the fairground in Hopkins is a fond reminder of the agricultural and industrial roots that helped make Hopkins and the surrounding area what it is today.

Hennepin County 4-H

Stop by the 4H tent this weekend to check out the various exhibits. Much of Hennepin County 4-H's work focuses on engaging youth in meaningful leadership opportunities. Hennepin County 4-H seeks to provide opportunities where youth can discover their leadership abilities, build critical thinking and decision-making skills, and contribute their leadership skills to positively impacting their community.

The University of Minnesota Extension Hennepin County 4-H supports high-quality, sustainable clubs and programs that allow young people (kindergarten through one year after high school) to improve their learning and leadership through educational programs and applied research.

University of Minnesota Extension partners with counties across the state to deliver local programming. Extension is a partnership between the University and state, federal, and county governments to provide scientific knowledge and expertise to the public. I am fortunate to serve on the Hennepin County Extension Committee.

Exhibit explores early effort to desegregate Minneapolis schools

By Elizabeth Shockman, MPR News

Adelsman is one of the curators behind a new exhibit at the Hennepin History Museum. “Separate Not Equal” tells the story of school desegregation and the pairing of Nathan Hale and Eugene Field elementary schools, which were less than 2 miles apart in south Minneapolis.

But for Adelsman, the story is not just public history, it’s personal. She was among the white students bused from Hale to Field when desegregation efforts started.

“It was really a wonderful thing for me to go to Field and have classmates that looked like my family. For many of us, for myself and the family that I come from, from our values, it made a big difference in my life.”
