That is why, I am excited to host the first in-person 'Coffee with the Commissioner' of 2022 tomorrow at 10:00 a.m.! I hope you'll join me at the Excelsior Library in the Water Street Room.

With spring cleaning season underway, residents may be left wondering how to sustainably dispose of some household items.

The good news is, the City of Orono is hosting a spring cleanup day for e-waste recycling and other household and construction items for residents of Spring Park, Long Lake, and Minnetonka Beach.

Find more details here.

🌎 Earth Day and Arbor Day Events

Earth Day and Arbor Day are just around the corner, and there are local events residents can attend to celebrate our community, trees, and the environment.

Hennepin County has celebrations for these days listed on our website, including Eden Prairie and Hopkins events, at this link along with a locater map.

Get outside and enjoy!

♻️ Share Your Ideas for Hennepin's Zero Waste Plan

Hennepin County wants to hear from residents as we develop our county’s Zero Waste Plan. Participate in developing the plan by telling us about your experiences in recycling, composting, and ideas to reduce waste on our new engagement site.

The Zero Waste Plan will complement the county’s newly adopted Climate Action Plan and provide the foundation for the 2024 Solid Waste Management Master Plan.

Hennepin County’s zero-waste vision is a system where all materials are designed to become resources for others to use. Our definition of zero waste is preventing 90% or more of all discarded materials from being landfilled or incinerated.

Residents can post ideas and stay informed about the process by registering through our Be Heard Hennepin website!

In addition to chairing the county HRA, LaTondresse serves as vice chair for the County Board’s Public Safety Committee. He outlined county actions on public safety that included the approval of a request for 31 new sheriff’s deputies last year and an $8.2 million expansion of the North Metro Public Safety Training Center in Maple Grove.

“When it’s complete it will be a world-class training space for sheriff’s deputies and law enforcement officers,” LaTondresse said.

🏠 Hennepin County Youth Homeless Demonstration Program Update

Hennepin County was selected as a Youth Homelessness Demonstration Program (YHDP). The program is a federal initiative to support selected communities as they develop and implement a coordinated community approach to preventing and ending youth homelessness.  Here is an update on the work that the YHDP Core Team and Youth Action Board (YAB) have completed:

  • The governance and decision making structure has been approved by the YAB and core team.
  • The statement of need has been assembled by Chapin Hall and reviewed by the Core Team and YAB. The statement of need has three investigative aims:
    •  Articulate the needs of the population of youth and young adults (YYA) at risk of or experiencing homelessness
    • Take stock of the resources within the youth homelessness system\
    • Depict gaps between the needs of the population and the resources available to meet these needs
  • The core team has spent time working on the goals and objectives for the coordinated community plan and which ones will be prioritized for YHDP funding. We will have more time to more fully develop some of these at a later date too.  The projects that have been prioritized for YHDP funding, given the eligibility for funding, parameters, and community needs include:
    • Adding services for the Foster Youth to Independence vouchers
    • Youth specific Homeless Management Information System staff
    • Youth Housing/Connection Navigators
    • Permanent Supportive Housing
    • Rapid Rehousing
