After a Special Collections newsletter hiatus, we’re back with a new and improved format. You have automatically been subscribed to this newsletter. Now Open to Researchers
The department re-opened to the public at the end of June with new hours and a new service model. Appointments are not necessary, but you do need to call Special Collections or check-in at the 4th floor reference desk upon arrival for department access.
You can speed up your visit by requesting materials be pulled in advance (email specialcoll@hclib.org or call 612-543-8200). Masks are currently required, regardless of vaccination status.

 Exhibit: First Avenue Posters
Minneapolis Central Library, Cargill Gallery
August 25 - October 14, 2021
Special Collections recently purchased a collection of over 200 original silkscreen posters spanning over two decades of concerts at First Avenue. Most of these posters were commissioned prints made by local artists and shops in the mid-2000s. The collection not only documents music performance history at First Avenue, but also the vibrant print scene in the Twin Cities.

Hennepin County Library Branch Records – History, building information, brochures and flyers, correspondence, and other materials documenting current libraries (and many former libraries) in Hennepin County.
Minneapolis Public Library News Articles – Thousands of newspaper articles documenting the history of Minneapolis Public Library from 1874 to 2008. Articles are arranged chronologically or by subject.
Alice Berg Johnson Lutheran Deaconess Nursing School Papers – Photographs and graduation materials from Alice Berg, a nursing student at Lutheran Deaconess Hospital in the 1930s.

Hennepin County Land Acquisition Group Maps – Maps showing Hennepin County highway and road construction projects through the decades.
D. Zimmerman Postcards – Hundreds of Minneapolis and Lake Minnetonka postcards collected by Lars Peterssen will add to our large assortment of local postcards. View a portion of our postcard collection in the Digital Collections.
Judge Edward F. and Alice Waite Papers – Family correspondence, draft publications, and other papers of the Waite family. As a local judge, Edward Waite helped to reshape America's juvenile justice system. His wife, Alice Waite, was also active in child welfare causes.

Dry Minnehaha Creek Turns Footpath
August 14, 1947: “The creek has been dry for several days and will remain that way until the rains come again. Normally the creek dries up in September or October, when the oversupply of aqua at Lake Minnetonka gives out. The dry spell, however, took Lake Minnetonka down early this year…Its appearance today harkens back to the thirsty years before 1942, when it was likely the creek would be dry all summer.”
