Updates on county board action related to the county's climate work

On Tuesday, April 13, the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners acting in committee meetings discussed three board request items related to county’s climate work.

  1. Commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 45% from 2010 levels by 2030 and achieving net zero emissions by 2050 in Hennepin County operations and geographically.
    • Commissioners unanimously supported adopting these goals at the next board meeting on Tuesday, April 20.
  2. Consider adoption of the Hennepin County Climate Action Plan.
    • Commissioners expressed great support for the plan’s goals and strategies.
    • Commissioners also recognized that significant changes have been made to the plan due to the considerable response by community groups and residents and sought more time for the public to comment on the updated version of the plan before board adoption. To provide that time, the board voted to lay over adoption of the plan. This means the plan will be considered again in committee meetings on Tuesday, April 27, and brought forward for final adoption in the following board meeting on Tuesday, May 5. More details are provided below on how to provide feedback.
  3. Establish a director position of Climate and Resiliency
    • Commissioners unanimously supported establishing a new position – Director of Climate and Resiliency. The position will be approved at the board meeting on Tuesday, April 20.
    • Commissioners discussed the importance of a director-level position to implement the plan. Prioritizing disparity reduction, this individual will operationalize the plan by focusing on strategy development and align resources to priorities by working across Hennepin County departments and with external partners.

Providing feedback and timeline toward board adoption

The public is encouraged to share feedback on the latest changes made to the plan by completing the Climate Action Plan feedback form by Thursday, April 22 at noon. The feedback will be summarized and shared with commissioners prior to the committee meetings on Tuesday, April 27.

To help develop your feedback, review the Climate Action Update published on Friday, April 9 that outlines the latest changes made to the plan.

You can also provide feedback on the plan with your county commissioner or participate in Open Forum ahead of the board meetings on Tuesday, April 27 and Tuesday, May 5. Learn more about the public participation process at board meetings.
