COVID-19 vaccine information

Hennepin County's COVID-19 vaccination roll out is underway and is following a phased approach. In the current phase, phase 1A, vaccinations are being administered to people who work in health care settings and people who live or work in long-term care facilities. Ultimately, all Minnesotans will have the opportunity to be vaccinated.

Hennepin County is working closely with the Minnesota Department of Health on the rollout of vaccines and a vaccination schedule. Here is what we know now: hennepin.us/vaccinefaq

Marla receives her vaccination

Hennepin County administers COVID-19 vaccinations

Marla Khan-Schwartz, a Hennepin County worker who falls in phase 1A, received her first dose of the COVID-19 Moderna vaccine on December 28. For Marla, getting the vaccine was bittersweet.

“I recently lost a friend to COVID who would have given many people this vaccine as a pharmacist, had he survived,” she said. “The emotion I felt today reflected that friend, others we have lost to the virus—and this new vehicle we have to end the pandemic. I got the vaccine not only for myself and my family, but for my whole community.”

Early interventions at Twin Cities homeless shelters 'saved lives'

Fox 9 reports that early in the pandemic, advocates for people experiencing homelessness were incredibly worried. Shelters were short on PPE and social distancing was nearly impossible. Advocates, however, say early intervention and public health partnerships likely prevented mass outbreaks.

"I absolutely believe it saved lives," said David Hewitt, the director of Hennepin County’s Office to End Homelessness. "I remember saying it back then, and I certainly feel that way now: the decisions and the steps we took in the first days and weeks were going to dictate how this played out in the year ahead."

To date, less than 1 percent of COVID-19 patients across the state were homeless at the time of infection.
