Ash tree removals begin later this week along Vernon Avenue

To respond to the emerald ash borer infestation, Hennepin County crews will remove up to 20 ash trees starting later this week along Vernon Avenue (County Road 158) between Interlachen Boulevard and Eden Avenue in Edina. These trees are all in the county right-of-way, which means we are responsible for maintaining them.

This work is the second and final phase of the ash borer removal plan on Vernon Avenue.

Be on the lookout for crews

You will notice crews working in the area over the next month to remove the trees. Hennepin County foresters and Transportation Operations crews are collaborating on ash tree removal work.

In accordance with the county’s emerald ash borer plan, all ash trees along county roads will be removed and, where possible, replaced with new trees. County foresters are preserving some mature ash trees at county libraries and facilities.

An inventory completed by county foresters counted more than 2,100 ash trees along county roads. Ash tree removal and replacement work is beginning in areas closest to known emerald ash borer infestations.

Later this year, foresters will look at alternate locations to plant new trees near where the existing trees were removed. The new trees will be a variety of species to increase the diversity and resiliency of our urban forest.

Emerald ash borer and options for managing ash trees

Emerald ash borer is an invasive tree pest that attacks and kills ash trees. All ash trees in the county are threatened by this pest and will eventually die if not treated.

In addition to managing ash trees on county property, Hennepin County is encouraging residents to determine if they have ash trees on their property and decide how they are going to manage them.
