Intersection project and bridge work complete

Two Hennepin County construction projects started earlier this year in the heart of Lake Minnetonka have come to an end.

The improvements made to the intersection and bridge will provide a safer travel experience and help enhance the livability and quality of life for people who reside in, work in and travel through this area.

Project improvements

Shoreline Drive and Shadywood Road intersection

This spring, we began making improvements to Shoreline Drive (County Road 15) and Shadywood Road (County Road 19). The goals of this work were to update the intersection to improve safety and meet today’s needs for travel in the area.

The intersection now offers:

  • Reconfigured travel lanes with dedicated left-turn lanes and upgraded traffic signals to provide a safer and more efficient travel through the intersection.
  • Modified right-turn lane from eastbound Shoreline Drive to southbound Shadywood Road to improve safety when merging.
  • New concrete bump-out on eastbound Shoreline Drive just east of Kelly Avenue to clearly separate the through lane from the right-turn lane.
  • New pavement providing a smoother ride.
  • Wider sidewalks, new curb ramps and accessible pedestrian signals that meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards.

Narrows Bridge rehabilitation

On Shadywood Road in Orono and Tonka Bay, we updated and rehabilitated the Shadywood Road Bridge over the Narrows Channel. This work will reduce the need for frequent maintenance activities in the future and the bridge should last many decades before any major reconstruction work is required.

To accomplish this work, crews:

  • Repaired abutments to provide a stronger foundation for the bridge.
  • Restored the bridge bearings and other bridge components to ensure the bridge continues to function as designed.
  • Repainted steel structures under the bridge to protect the steel and improve bridge aesthetics.
  • Added a new concrete bridge deck that will continue to handle all vehicle types.
  • Added taller concrete walls with new ornamental railings.
