Census to continue until October 31

Census

The census deadline has been a moving target, but now is scheduled to end October 31.

Minnesota is lagging behind almost all other states in the number of people who have been contacted by a census taker to complete the form. This means that we are missing historically undercounted communities.

Help change the numbers so Hennepin County has a complete and inclusive count!

Let’s make sure everyone is counted so we don’t miss out on equal representation and funding for education, healthcare, housing and other vital services for the next 10 years.

  • Complete the census now:
    • Online: my2020census.gov
    • Toll-free: 1-844-330-2020
  • Talk to your extended family, friends and neighbors to see if they need help completing it.

Facts to share with family, friends, neighbors

  • No citizenship question asked
  • Your info is NOT shared with your boss, landlord, or law enforcement

Each person counted = $28,000 for their neighborhood over the next decade (yes, really!)

How Hennepin County is increasing shelter capacity

housing

We have been working, so very hard, to meet the housing needs of the 1000+ people who are currently living unsheltered in Hennepin County.  I feel so good about this work; the work of our staff, the work of our partners and the work of organizers and activists who know, just as I do, that housing is a basic and fundamental human right.  This is why I am excited to share that during our Committee Meetings on 10/6/20 we as the Hennepin County Board , invested over $15M in housing capacity for our unsheltered neighbors and friends.  This includes the following:

Continuing our partnership with AICDC to provide low-barrier and harm-reduction housing.

Investing in the Indoor Villages model of tiny homes with a service-rich environment for our unsheltered/unhoused.

Boosting supportive housing capacity for our friends and neighbors needing supports as they secure permanent housing.

This is what we've been working on to address not only the housing crisis in our county and within Minneapolis, but also, the desperate need for increased capacity for emergency shelter that is low-barrier and fosters a model of harm-reduction.  I want to thank Hennepin County staff, my colleagues, organizers, activists and those of us experiencing life outside as winter draws near.

We will continue this work, in addition to following through on our December 2019 priority to house people who identify as women with culturally specific services for Black women (the 2nd largest group of people experiencing unsheltered homelessness).  The fight continues and housing is my top priority.  No one should go without shelter.

Longfellow Community Council (LCC) Board of Directors Elections

Tuesday, October 27th

The Longfellow Community Council (LCC) is YOUR neighborhood organization if you live or own a business in the Longfellow, Howe, Cooper or Hiawatha neighborhoods and we’d love your participation in our Board of Directors elections! At this time, we are seeking nominations for open seats on the Board.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and unrest after the murder of George Floyd, the LCC is working with residents and through community partnerships on these issues facing our community:
• Rebuilding businesses and community resources in the impacted areas
• Food security
• Safety and security of residents and businesses
LCC is your citizen participation organization in the place you live, work and/or play. No one should feel intimidated by joining the LCC Board of Directors. LCC is committed to having a Board that is welcoming and that represents the cultural diversity of Greater Longfellow. Any resident or person who owns a business in Great Longfellow can nominate themselves. LCC needs your input to represent the broader community.
