Absentee voting begins in Minnesota on Friday, September 18, for the 2020 presidential/general election.
Hennepin County will begin mailing out absentee ballots to those who have already requested one on that day. It will also be the first day that those who want to vote early in-person can do so at an early voting center.
Because of concerns about COVID-19 and significant interest in the presidential election, a record number of people are expected to vote by mail this year. County elections staff are encouraging voters to not wait to return their ballot to avoid delays.

Minnesota makes it safe and easy to vote early. Here’s what to expect
Eligible voters are encouraged to check their registration status at mnvotes.org. There they can also update their voter registration or request an absentee ballot.
Vote by mail
Hennepin County will begin mailing out absentee ballots on September 18 for those who have already requested one. Voters who apply for an absentee ballot on or after September 18 can expect to have it mailed to them after their request is received.
Returning your ballot:
- Ballot signature envelopes should be filled out accurately as per instructions.
- Ballots come with a pre-paid, pre-addressed envelope for return. They must be postmarked on or before Election Day (November 3) and received no later than November 10.
- Voters who don’t think their ballot will be received in time can choose to pay for an express delivery service.
Drop off your ballot
Due to COVID-19, voters are encouraged to return their ballot by mail. If necessary, voters may return their ballot in person during absentee voting hours. Voters should be prepared to follow COVID-19 policies, including wearing a face covering and staying six (6) feet away from others.

- Minneapolis Early Vote Center (Minneapolis residents only)
- Your city clerk’s office (Note: Some municipal buildings remain closed. Please check building hours by contacting your city clerk before exercising this option).
Ballots must be dropped off before 3 p.m. on Election Day.
Early in-person voting
Eligible voters can vote absentee in-person at their city hall, Hennepin County Government Center, or the Minneapolis Early Vote Center (Minneapolis residents only). In-person early voting is available September 18 through November 2.
