News: Prepare for Primary Election Day tomorrow

Absentee voting stats

As of August 10 at 8 a.m. in Hennepin County:

  • Total ballots issued: 261,600
  • Total ballots accepted: 144,300

In the 2016 election, a total of 7,999 votes were cast absentee during the primary election and 203,402 during the general election.

New for the 2020 State Primary, Hennepin County elections will report results on election night and continue to update the results until all accepted ballots have been counted by Friday, August 14, 2020.

Voting at the polling place

Be prepared to follow COVID-19 requirements and guidance

  • Wear a mask or face covering
  • Stay 6 feet away from other voters and election judges
  • Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer after dealing with election judges or touching any voting equipment

If you need to register on Election Day, bring an authorized proof of residence.

By agent: authorize someone to pick up and return your ballot

To qualify, you must:

  • Live in a nursing home, assisted living facility, residential treatment center, group home or battered women's shelter
  • Be hospitalized
  • Unable to go to the polling place due to incapacitating health reasons or a disability, including those needing to quarantine or isolate due to COVID-19

By mail: Postmark by August 11 (to be received by August 13)

Mail your ballot back in the pre-paid, pre-addressed envelope that was provided with your ballot materials. If you don't think your ballot will be received in time using regular mail, you may choose to pay for an express delivery service.

In person: return by 3 p.m. on August 11

Return your ballot to Hennepin County elections or your city clerk's office. Some municipal buildings remain closed. For building hours, contact your city clerk's office.

Due to COVID-19, you’re encouraged to return your ballot by mail. If you choose to return you ballot in person, follow COVID-19 policies, including wearing a face covering and maintaining 6 feet of physical distance.
