Biking safely this summer

We know so many more of you are biking during the pandemic, and we are proud to support you and the health and well-being of our community by being more welcoming to people choosing to bike. And, as shared below, we were recently recognized for our work in this area.

Also in this issue: we have a note on our fall count efforts and the latest on a couple of construction projects improving roadway corridors for all users.

Hennepin County has earned recognition as a gold level Bicycle Friendly Business from the League of American Bicyclists.

The Bicycle Friendly Business award recognizes an organization’s contributions over months and years to the movement to build a Bicycle Friendly America for everyone.

Some of the ways the county has done this include:

  • adding more biking education courses for employees
  • building new secured bicycle parking
  • creating an employee interest and support group for biking and walking
  • trading time for fitness to buy bikes and subsidized Nice Ride accounts

Continued commitment

“Since Hennepin County applied for the Bicycle Friendly Business award in February 2020, much has changed across the country,” said Bill Nesper, executive director of the League of American Bicyclists. “What hasn’t changed is the commitment of our Bicycle Friendly Business award winners to the health and well-being of their employees, customers, and community through the promotion and encouragement of bicycling as a means of transportation, fun, and fitness.”

There are more than 1,400 local businesses, government agencies, and Fortune 500 companies across the United States that are transforming the American workplace to be more welcoming to our customers and employees who bike. Hennepin County is home to several other businesses that have been recognized as gold, silver and bronze level Bicycle Friendly Businesses.

The county was previously recognized as a silver level Bicycle Friendly Business and continues to be recognized as a silver level Bicycle Friendly Community.

Summer 2020 project updates

Lake Street and Excelsior Boulevard (County roads 3 and 25) in Minneapolis

We added new curb ramps that meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards and new protected waiting (refuge) areas for people crossing the intersection, with pedestrian island paths connecting multiple intersection crosswalks. We also added new traffic signals with accessible pedestrian signal buttons.

Flying Cloud Drive (County Road 61) in Eden Prairie and Chanhassen

Project features

We added a multi-use trail along the north side of the road that will fill the gap in the trail network from Shakopee to Eden Prairie and realigned Spring Road to improve sightlines. We also reconstructed the Riley Creek Bridge and raised the roadway above the 100-year flood plain to help minimize the potential for road closures during Minnesota River flood events.
