West Broadway Avenue Bridges reconstruction in Robbinsdale and Minneapolis

Generic open house photo

Hennepin County, in partnership with the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board and cities of Robbinsdale and Minneapolis, is in the preliminary design stage of reconstructing the West Broadway Avenue Bridges (County Road 81) in Robbinsdale and Minneapolis.

Using feedback received from the community, we created preliminary designs with community-focused improvements for the new bridges and intersection, including:

  • Shortening trail crossings providing safer intersection crosswalks for people walking, biking and rolling.
  • Redesigning ramp connections allowing for improved sight distance and safer merging.
  • Improving trail connections to provide additional access for people walking, biking and rolling to regional trails nearby.

We need your input now

Please join us at the open house to review the proposed corridor improvements and provide comments to project staff before they begin work on finalizing designs.

There will be a 10-minute presentation at 5:30 p.m. to highlight the progress made and next steps in the design process. You are welcome to stop in at any time.

About this project

The West Broadway Avenue Bridges reconstruction project will make improvements to three bridges and the intersection below connecting Theodore Wirth and Victory Memorial parkways, as well as Oakdale and Lowry avenues (County Road 153).

Prior to the design of the bridges and intersection below, Hennepin County and project partners evaluated opportunities to improve safety and mobility for all people.

In spring 2019, the project team conducted surveys, attended local community meetings and events with the goal of identifying design needs and concepts for this reconstruction project.

Final design work begins soon; construction begins in 2020

Next, the team created preliminary designs based on community feedback. At this stage, the team is interested in gathering input from the community on the preliminary designs.

They will then weigh feedback received as they work to finalize designs which will begin soon and continue into early 2020.

Construction is expected to begin in summer or fall 2020.
