The Minnesota Geological Survey (MGS) has recently published the new Hennepin County Geologic Atlas--Part A. Information contained in the atlas details location and characteristics of subsurface features, especially those that influence groundwater flow and pollutant pathways.
It’s the first time the atlas has been updated in more than 25 years. The data is available for the first-time online, with PDF reports, maps and GIS files. Print versions can be purchased from the MGS Map Sales.
A public presentation of the new atlas will be held on April 22, 2019. Professionals who work with subsurface natural systems and public interested in local geology and water quality are encouraged to attend.
Monday, April 22
9 a.m.-12 p.m.
Hennepin County Library—Ridgedale, Robert H. Rohlf Room

As part of the presentation, Hennepin County’s Emergency Management team will present the recently compiled Landslide Atlas of Hennepin County. The Landslide Atlas is a powerful example of how the Geologic Atlas mapping can be used to answer more specific questions about hazardous risks.
Presentation agenda:
- The Geologic Atlas program – Julia Steenberg, MGS
- Geology and resources of Hennepin County:
- Bedrock units—Andrew Retzler, MGS
- Glacial deposits—Angela Berthold, MGS
- Applying the GIS version of the Atlas—Rich Lively, MGS
- Upcoming Part B: Hydrogeology—Jim Berg, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources
- Hennepin County Emergency Management: Landslide Atlas—Carrie Jennings, Freshwater Society
