Sheriff Stanek elected as 1st Vice-President of the
National Sheriffs’ Association
June 22, 2018 (MINNEAPOLIS) – Hennepin County
Sheriff Rich Stanek was elected and sworn in as the 1st Vice-President
of the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) during the annual conference in New
Orleans, LA, earlier this week.
Next year, Sheriff
Stanek is expected to serve as President of the organization that represents our
nation’s more than 3,000 Sheriffs. He has been a member of the Executive
Committee since 2009, most recently serving as the 2nd
Vice-President, and also chairs the Homeland Security Committee for the NSA.
“It is an honor
to help lead this organization that ensures that every Sheriff and their employees
have a voice in the national public safety conversation,” said Sheriff Stanek. “Not
only are we representing Sheriffs, but we are ensuring that best practices are
shared nationally among agencies of all sizes to help meet the ever changing
demands of law enforcement. Year-after-year, I am able to bring new ideas back to
Hennepin County to ensure we are providing enhanced services to our residents.”
During the conference,
Sheriff Stanek spoke with fellow Sheriffs and their staff about topics that
included homeland security, jail mental health reform, new DNA techniques used
by crime labs for evidence processing, and the national opioid crisis.
The NSA
conference was hosted this year by the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office, and
took place from June 15 to 20, 2018.
The National
Sheriffs' Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising the
level of professionalism among those in law enforcement. Chartered in 1940, the
organizations is a professional association dedicated to serving the Office of
Sheriff and its affiliates through police education, police training, and
general law enforcement information resources. NSA represents thousands of
sheriffs, deputies and other law enforcement, public safety professionals, and
concerned citizens nationwide.
NSA's roots
can be traced back to October 1888, when a group of sheriffs in Minnesota and
surrounding states formed an organization, which they named the Inter-State
Sheriffs' Association. The purpose of this association was to give opportunity
for a wider, mutual acquaintance, to exchange ideas for more efficient service,
and to assist one another in the apprehension of criminals.
