Paving rescheduled to Wednesday

Due to rain these past few days, paving the seven crossings between Wolf Pointe Trail and Wazyata Boulevard West has been delayed.

Weather permitting, paving is expected to begin at 7 a.m. tomorrow, June 20, and be complete during the evening hours.

Why does rain delay construction?

Rain has a significant impact on any construction activity that involves moving, paving or pouring material such as soil, asphalt and concrete.

These materials are highly sensitive to moisture. Excess moisture can impact the strength, durability and longevity of the final product, like roads, curbs and medians.

So, rain can quickly shut a project down when the activities are focused on these materials. The duration of the suspension depends on the amount the rainfall and how fast the area dries. And, there may be delays as crews do clean up and get equipment back into place.

Ongoing and upcoming construction activities

Shoreline restoration continues

Over the past two months, we have made significant progress along the Long Lake shoreline. Last week, the new shoreline foundation was successfully rebuilt using two key restoration elements: reinforced soil slopes (RSS) and riprap.

  • RSS is a soil reinforcement method where multiple layers of geogrid fabric blankets are placed in the ground to improve soil strength and the stability of the shoreline.
  • Riprap is a range of large rocks that are placed along areas exposed to bodies of water like Long Lake. Riprap provides a natural looking shoreline that permanently protects the shoreline from erosion.

Over the next few months, you will begin seeing the shoreline area start resembling a more finished product. Crews will begin building the new roadway and new trail, as well as start streetscaping work to improve the aesthetics of the shoreline.

Grading and concrete work begins

Between Mill Street and Cemetery Road

With utility, subgrade (earthwork) and foundation work completed between Mill Street and Cemetery Road, crews will begin constructing the new roadway on the northern half of Wayzata Boulevard.

Grading this week

First, crews will grade the area using sand and gravel to level the base in order to pour new curbs and gutters, as well as for the new roadway and trails.

Weather permitting, grading is expected to be complete by the end of the week.

Curb and gutter follows next week

Once grading is complete, crews will pour new curbs and gutters throughout this stretch of road. Weather permitting, curb and gutter work is expected to take up to a week to complete.

Excavations continue

Between Old Long Lake Road and Luce Line Trail overpass

Crews are continuing excavation work along the northern half of Wayzata Boulevard between Old Long Lake Road and the Luce Line Trail overpass.

Excavations are part of the overall soil correction work being done throughout the corridor to provide extra road strength to support traffic during stages of reconstruction, as well as for the completed roadway and trail.

This work will have some traffic impacts starting later this week, as large trucks will be hauling soil in and out of the work areas. Additional crews will be on site to guide traffic during the work.

Weather permitting, excavation work is expected to be complete by early July.
