On
Saturday May 5th, partners and volunteers joined together to plant
75 trees along midtown greenway near Hiawatha Ave and Sabo Bridge. County Commissioner Peter McLaughlin welcomed
nearly 50 volunteers, stating that after Arbor Day 2018, volunteers will have
planted an 18-year total of 5,102 trees and shrubs along the Midtown Greenway.
"We have come a long way from 20 years ago when this was an old railway
trench, and a few people in the community dreamed of the possibilities,"
recalled Commissioner McLaughlin. "After years of investment, partnership,
and hard work, including planting over 5,000 trees and shrubs, we now see the
Best Urban Bike Tail in the Nation."
More than 100 teenagers, who have dealt with
everything from homelessness to court supervision, celebrated receiving their
diplomas on June 1st. According to a 2014
Hennepin County study, only 30 percent of county-involved youth go on to
graduate from high school — well below the countywide graduation rate of 70
percent. Among county-involved youth, foster care teens are the most likely to
graduate, with 51 percent matriculating compared to 25 percent of those on
probation and 32 percent of teen parents. The Recognition of Success ceremony is
designed to celebrate their strength, resilience and perseverance through each
of their adversities to obtaining a high school diploma.
The Hosmer Library in the Central neighborhood is now offering
seeds along with their collection of books.
The Hennepin County Library has recently finished sorting through
donated seeds from seed companies, the community organization Plant Grow Share, and neighborhood gardeners. The seed library fulfills aspects of the
library system’s work such as lifelong learning, community engagement and
encouraging both self-sufficiency and a sharing economy. “At the library, we see this as extension of
our core mission of empowering the community through information, and community
connection and resource-sharing,” said Chip Gehring, adult and teen services
librarian. Donors can drop off seeds,
and gardeners can pick up seeds during Hosmer Library hours. The library is also holding seed sorting
parties on July 1st and August 5th, 2-4 p.m.
