New to bicycle commuting? Just want to go for a casual ride? Hennepin County has all kinds of resources to get you rolling. We've got interactive bicycle maps, recommendations for routes, safety tips, and a whole lot more.
I have served on the Community Action Partnership of Hennepin County's board since taking office over a year ago. Since then, we've worked towards integrating Minneapolis into our service area and achieving our goal of eliminating poverty in our county. To that end, CAP-HC offers services to individuals through energy assistance programs, home-ownership services, food support, free tax assistance, legal services, employment counseling, and financial counseling.
Serving with the organization has been an inspiring venture. Our leadership is composed of members from the private sector, public sector, and community members who currently or previously utilized CAP-HC services. The organization presents an excellent example of how many different stakeholders can come together to make our community a more supportive and nurturing place for everyone.
There's been a lot of hard work and change in this last year, and we were recently awarded with a proclamation from Governor Dayton's office declaring May 2018 as "Community Action Month". Thank you to all of our board members, volunteers, donors, and service recipients. Together, we can all do better.

Construction season has begun, and there are several large projects in District 5. Flying Cloud Drive in Eden Prairie is now closed between Charlson and Spring roads until this fall. Major construction on Richfield's 66th Street (between Humboldt and 5th Ave) will be finished by this fall.
Hennepin County provides regular updates and tips for avoiding traffic backups around projects. Sign up to get them directly here.
This last month, the
board approved Hennepin County Youth Sports Grants. Two were awarded to Richfield Public Schools for soccer and
basketball equipment, but we didn't receive enough requests to
distribute the full amount.
Our girls and boys grow up both
mentally and physically stronger when we support sports as part of a
healthy lifestyle. I encourage all of our schools, community centers,
and youth organizations to apply and take advantage of this program.

The Board also approved two grants to Bloomington ($10,500) and Richfield ($2,100). They will be used to expand public access to recycling containers at the Bloomington Ice Garden and Wood Lake Nature Center.

Since our last newsletter in April, here are a few highlights from my work...
- Richfield Bike Advocate's Sean Hayford Oleary was the winner of Metro Transit's Commuter Choice Award for Commuter Champion of the Year, and Richfield Chamber of Commerce President Anne Schultz was an honorable mention in the same category. Congratulations to both of you!
- Attended the DOCCR's banquet honoring volunteers in our criminal justice system. Our criminal justice system relies on volunteers to run many of the rehabilitative and restorative justice programs in our county jails. I cannot thank them enough.
