A Minneapolis woman has been charged in a Thanksgiving Day murder, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Monday.
Anenia Marie Hare, 47, is charged with second-degree murder without intent in the killing of Edward Caliph, 69.
According to the criminal complaint, police were dispatched to an apartment building in the 5700 block of 33rd Avenue South, on Thanksgiving, after four calls to 911. The officers who responded found Caliph face down near a broken window and there were other signs of a struggle. He was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead.
Hare told police she had invited Caliph over for Thanksgiving dinner, but before they had started to eat, she looked over and saw him lighting up a crack pipe. She was angry because he didn’t ask for permission and did not offer to share. She held a TV antennae in one hand and a butcher’s knife in the other, in an attempt to be dominating, and told him he could not leave, the complaint states.
Hare stated that Caliph yelled for neighbors to call 911. She also said he grabbed a vacuum cleaner and broke a window with it and that she grabbed Caliph around the shoulders and fell on top of him. They struggled and Caliph tried to get the knife out of Hare’s hand. Hare said that after she was on top of Caliph, who was face down for a while, he started snoring.
Hare is in custody and expected to make her first court appearance Tuesday.
