Wayzata Police Officer Killed in the Line of Duty

September 8, 2017 (WAYZATA) - At approximately 12:30 p.m. a Wayzata Police officer responded to remove hazardous road debris from the roadway of eastbound Highway 12. The officer, who has been identified by Wayzata Police Chief as Officer William Mathews, a 9 year veteran of the Wayzata Police Department, was driving a fully marked Wayzata squad car, and was outside his vehicle when he was struck by a Nissan Murano.

The officer was transported to North Memorial, but died as a result of his injuries. 

The driver of the vehicle, who has been identified as Beth Ilene Freeman (DOB: 08/17/63), has been booked into the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office Jail on charges of Criminal Vehicular Operation.

The MN State Patrol and the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office are investigating.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office will identify the official cause of death.
