Chet Cooper to assume role as assistant county administrator

Chet Cooper

The board appointed Chet Cooper as assistant county administrator, effective September 3. This position oversees management of the county's Operations line of business and proposes direction to other county leaders.

Cooper, who most recently served as director of the Department of Community Corrections and Rehabilitation, has been with the county since 1985. He has many years of leadership experience with the Hennepin County Sherriff’s Office and the Department of Community Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Cooper succeeds Judy Regenscheid in this position, who will retire in December. Regenscheid is a long-term Hennepin County employee with roles in Human Services, Information Technology and County Administration. She served as the county’s chief information officer and is the current chief operating officer. She has held many leadership roles in and outside the organization and has mentored many staff throughout her career.

Environmental education grants awarded to 11 organizations

The board approved 11 Green Partners environmental education grants for projects that empower residents to take actions to improve the environment. The grant agreements are for projects with the following organizations:

  • Climate Generation: A Will Steger Legacy, Minneapolis, Edina, Hopkins, Eden Prairie - $20,000
  • Freshwater Society, northern and western Hennepin County - $20,000
  • Lao Assistance Center of Minnesota, Minneapolis and suburbs - $19,900
  • Minneapolis Area Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Bloomington, Maple Grove, Minneapolis, Plymouth - $20,000
  • Minneapolis Public Schools - $7,100
  • Minnesota Interfaith Power and Light, Brooklyn Park, Minneapolis, Minnetonka, Plymouth, Osseo -  $20,000
  • Move Minneapolis - $7,800
  • Orono Public Schools - $4,700
  • Robbinsdale Area Schools, Robbinsdale, Crystal, New Hope, Brooklyn Center - $8,000
  • Spark Youth, Minneapolis - $18,000
  • Twin Cities Public Television, Minneapolis - $8,000

Since 2012, the Green Partners program has awarded 122 grants totaling more than $1.1 million.

Grants will improve water quality of lakes Ardmore and Independence

The board awarded $79,500 of Natural Resources Opportunity grants to protect water quality and enhance natural resources. Grants were awarded to:

  • City of Medina: $20,000 to implement five stormwater best management projects that will reduce sediment and phosphorous that reach Lake Ardmore
  • Pioneer-Sarah Creek Watershed Management Commission: $59,500 to stabilize eroding ravine in the Baker Park Reserve draining into Lake Independence

To date, Natural Resources grant programs have provided more $1.2 million in county cost-share grants to landowners and local governments for 79 projects.
