Describe your work.
As a Financial Inclusion Fellow, I am working with Commissioner Marion
Greene’s office this summer to explore the topic of financial inclusion and how
it affects Hennepin County residents.
In my role, I have been meeting with community leaders who work on initiatives
to address economic disparities and connect people to financial resources they
need to build wealth and strengthen financial capability. Hearing from experts
has helped me to deepen my knowledge of the issue and consider possible ways
Hennepin County could further promote financial inclusion. At the conclusion of
my fellowship, I will make a recommendation about how the county could address
this issue.
Outside of the fellowship, I am a full-time MBA student at the University
of Minnesota Carlson School of Management. This fellowship has been a great
opportunity for me to apply the strategic thinking and entrepreneurial skills that
I’m developing in school.
What part of your job do you find most
challenging?
Financial inclusion is
a broad topic, and there are many ways it can be strengthened and addressed. A
challenge has been balancing breadth versus depth in my research. On the
breadth side, I want to cast a wide net and learn as much as possible about the
topic, but on the depth side, at a certain point, I know I need to focus in and
deeply explore several possible directions.
What do you find most
enjoyable?
Learning from community leaders has been a highlight. I am very grateful
to the passionate leaders that have so generously given up their time to talk
with me and share their thoughts about financial inclusion. I’ve enjoyed the
conversations and have been impressed at the smart ideas and work that is being
done in this area.
What is one thing
everyone should know about the work you do?
In my time working at Hennepin County, I’ve learned that fresh ideas and
innovation are welcomed here. Employees are consistently striving to make our
community better, and they are willing to think creatively and strategically to
find ways to address many problems that do not have straightforward solutions.
I’ve been impressed with the amazing and dedicated staff members that I’ve met
and the important work they do on a daily basis.
