Portland and Cedar Avenues to close May 8 for greenway bridge demolition

Starting Monday, May 8, Portland Avenue (County Road 35) and Cedar Avenue (County Road 152) in Minneapolis will close between 28th Street and Lake Street as reconstruction of the two bridges over the Midtown Greenway begins.

Both bridges will be closed to all road traffic for the duration of the project. Work is expected to last one construction season and be significantly complete with the road reopened by December this year. See below for detour information.

There will also be some short-term lane reductions on Portland and Cedar avenues ahead of the full closure May 8, so crews can complete prep work on sanitary sewer lines. The reductions will occur during off-peak times and should not impact traffic significantly. The work is tentatively scheduled for May 4 and 5.

Greenway trail closure at Cedar Avenue expected May 15

Starting Monday, May 15, the greenway trail is expected to close at Cedar Avenue as crews demolish the bridge. This work is expected to last several days with the trail reopened by the weekend. See below for detour information.

Once demolition of the Cedar Avenue bridge is complete and the trail is reopened, crews will begin demolition of the Portland Avenue bridge and the trail will be closed at this location for approximately five days. This closure is expected to happen Monday, May 22.

Efforts will be made throughout construction to minimize trail impacts whenever possible. In general, crews will stagger work so the trail is not closed at both bridge locations at once. Full closures of the trail are expected to be relatively infrequent and short-term.

Hennepin County is reconstructing the Portland and Cedar Avenue bridges over the Midtown Greenway in Minneapolis in 2017. Reconstruction is needed to address structural and safety issues due to their age.

The century-old bridges will be reconstructed in their original historic style, and receive design and functional improvements.

Portland Avenue improvements

  • Widening sidewalk on bridge deck from eight to ten feet
  • Changing traffic lanes from three ten-foot through lanes to two 13-foot through lanes
  • Adding a three-foot buffer to the existing six-foot bike lane
  • Adaptable design to accommodate possible future transit infrastructure

Cedar Avenue improvements

  • Widening sidewalk on bridge deck from eight to ten feet
  • Changing traffic lanes from four ten-foot lane through lanes to two 11-foot through lanes and two 13-foot through lanes
  • Adding structural reinforcements beneath the bridge deck to extend longevity
  • Adaptable design to accommodate possible future transit infrastructure
