Community celebrating library opening on Thursday, May 18

Webber Park Library

On May 18, North Minneapolis residents will celebrate the opening of their newest library.

After more than a year of construction, the new Hennepin County Library – Webber Park will open about a quarter mile west of the park that shares its name.

Please join in the celebration.

Thursday, May 18, 5 p.m.
Hennepin County Library-Webber Park
4440 Humboldt Avenue North, Minneapolis

The public is invited to the celebration, which will include comments from local officials and a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The library will open to the public afterward. The library will remain open until 8 p.m. that day.

On Saturday, May 20, the library will host a community celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Events will include live music from a small orchestra and a flute choir and a visit with a naturalist. In addition, families can explore the new library, including the early literacy and school age play and learn spaces, try STEM activities and take a walk on the Story Stroll outside.

About the new library

At 8,300 square feet, the $10 million new Webber Park Library is twice the size of the old library, and will offer three meeting rooms, as well as spaces for reading, studying and playing. The library also will feature outdoor gathering spaces for readers and neighbors, with landscaped green spaces and covered porches that echo the fronts of the homes in the Camden neighborhood.

"This library will be a wonderful indoor and outdoor gathering space for residents of North Minneapolis," said Linda Higgins, who represents District 2 on the Hennepin County Board."I am proud that the county is delivering on its promise to create a space that will be such an asset to the community."

The new library also offers 1,070 feet of shelf space for 15,415 books, CDs and DVDs. In addition, 23 computers, and improved Wi-Fi will provide access to the library's extensive collection of online books, databases, movies and music.  The new library also will be open more hours each week: Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m  to 5 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday, noon to 8 p.m.

"Here we have a prominent location for a wonderful facility," said Mike Opat, who represents District 1 on the County Board, an area that used to include parts of North Minneapolis. “We worked to find the best possible site for a new library. It was certainly not easy. This library is a beautiful addition to the neighborhood and to our world-class system."

Mohammed Lawal of LSE Architects designed the library; Adophson and Peterson Construction built it.
