Gun crime charged in Brooklyn Center homicide

A 20-year-old Brooklyn Park man was charged Thursday with felon in possession of a gun in connection with the shooting death of a young woman in a Brooklyn Center motel.

Cedric Smith was charged with the single count by the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office. According to the complaint, he possessed the handgun which went off and killed 18-year-old Allie Campbell of St. Cloud in the evening of Feb. 11. In jail calls to his mother, Smith admitted he was not supposed to be around guns, the criminal complaint states.

Surveillance video from the Quality Inn Motel, 1600 James Circle, showed Smith and Campbell walking through the motel lobby at 8:17 p.m. that evening. The video also showed Smith, another man and another woman running down a staircase at 8:30 p.m., according to the criminal complaint.

The man who ran out of the motel with Smith later told police he had been selling marijuana from room 225 most of the day and at one point, Smith borrowed the man’s car to get his girlfriend, Campbell. When they returned to the room, the woman who ran out with the other man and Smith said the couple were friendly and laughing, the complaint states.

Smith and Campbell went into the bathroom where apparently the gun went off and the bullet struck Campbell. She was pronounced dead when medics arrived.

No first appearance date has been set.
