E-NEWS ARCHIVE

Coming soon.

Dear Friend,

The holiday season is traditionally a time of reflection and connection. As we wrestle with the results of the election, and the deep divides our nation faces are made abundantly clear, let that be the case this year more than ever.

In the meantime, know that I do not waver. And nor should you. Together we will continue building a community and world in which everyone is cherished, everyone thrives.

My very best,

Marion Greene

Marion Greene National Adoption Day

Lauding family at Adoption Day

It was a privilege to meet a few of the 13 families who adopted 19 Hennepin County kids on National Adoption Day, November 19. I am inspired by the people in our community who open their hearts and homes to kids who need someone to love them and be there for them. Commissioner Mike Opat and I were joined at the microphone by Senator Amy Klobuchar, who has long worked to help families make their adoptions happen.

Waste sort

Waste study spotlights organics

Our best opportunities to increase recycling and reduce our trash are increasing organics recycling and preventing food waste, recycling more paper and cardboard, and increasing recycling of materials at drop-off locations. These are the recently released findings of a waste study conducted earlier this year.

Food is the most prevalent material in the trash by far. Steps you can take to reduce food waste include using up all of the food that you buy, practicing meal planning, understanding the date labels on food, and properly storing your food. As we enter the holiday season, residents can use holiday parties and dinners as an opportunity to learn about preventing the waste of food and other organics. Find resources at savethefood.com.

Results from the waste sort are now available, and they provide clear insights into opportunities to increase recycling and reduce waste.

10 years of active living

Hennepin County Active Living celebrated its 10th anniversary in November during the partnership's annual fall workshop.

Active Living is a cutting edge initiative that addresses rising rates of obesity and related health problems with physical activity and the built environment. It has brought dozens of partners together throughout the past decade — including local, regional and state agencies and non-profits. I’m proud to champion this work, that represents Hennepin County’s willingness to try new approaches to the challenges our communities face.

Board meeting highlights

Federal program helps offenders with mental illness

The board signed on to the White House Data-Driven Justice Initiative, which aims to keep low-risk offenders out of jail to help them become productive members of our community. This initiative will further efforts to consider offenders’ mental health. Nationwide, 64 percent of all people in jail have a mental illness, and the county jail may not be best suited to treat and support those individuals.

East 46th Street Bridge replacement plans move forward

The board approved funding to replace the East 46th Street Bridge over Godfrey Parkway in Minneapolis, at a proposed county cost of $3.6 million.  The bridge must be replaced because it is structurally deficient and has a sufficiency rating of 33. The county’s goal is to replace or improve all county owned bridges on county roads that are below a sufficiency rating of 50. Replacement of this bridge has been included in the capital budget at an estimated cost of $4.6 million, which includes $1 million in state bridge bonds and the remainder in state aid (gas tax) funds.

Three Rivers Park District budget approved

The board approved the Three Rivers Park District’s 2017 budget with a total property tax levy of $41.5 million, which is a slight decrease from last year.

Parks and trails in the district’s purview have seen a 3.4 percent increase in use in the past year, which is in contrast to the 1.3 percent decrease in parks and trail usage in the metro area on the whole.
