Greene Room recap
A month ago my office hosted our first Greene Room. About 70 people came to Bryant Lake Bowl for a fantastic discussion of bankedness and building wealth and access to credit and banking services in financially excluded communities.
Thank you again to our panelists, Tracy Fischman, Cassaundra Adler, Aaron Sojourner, Minneapolis City Council Member John Quincy, and John Thorson.

Hennepin County celebrates Prince
Hennepin County joined Minneapolis and the world in celebrating the life of Prince by lighting the Lowry Bridge in purple on Thursday, April 21.
Housing Court pilot to begin
At my initiative, the board passed a pilot April 26 to focus legal support on meritorious eviction cases to keep people in their self-funded housing, and to prevent homelessness.
Hennepin County currently supports Legal Aid's Housing Court project with a mission of providing walk-in legal advice to anyone who requests it. In the last two years, this project has seen over 3,000 cases. Every year, project attorneys identify hundreds of families facing eviction without access to legal representation necessary to present meritorious cases.
In this new pilot, Legal Aid and Volunteer Lawyers Network will focus efforts on meritorious cases. The results will be reviewed after six months of data collecting to determine next steps in sustaining the enduring success among these clients.
County to protect pollinators
Led by Commissioner Linda Higgins, the board approved a resolution directing the Public Works Department to protect and expand pollinator-friendly habitat, by limiting the use of systemic insecticides, such as neonicotinoids, on county-owned property and requiring that new plants and trees installed on county-owned property are free of the pesticide. As part of the resolution, members of the board also encourage county residents, school districts, nonprofit organizations, and businesses to implement pollinator-friendly best practices on their properties.

Energy Assistance Program (EAP) extended
EAP has the opportunity to implement program changes to serve more households and serve households more. These changes include extending the application deadline to July 1, 2016 and increasing the maximum crisis benefit from $500 to $1,000. These changes are effective immediately.

Cedar Riverside Opportunity Center to move forward
The County Board voted to approve lease agreements and operational costs for space related to the Cedar Riverside Opportunity Center, a one-stop shop for educational and workforce resources and a pipeline to employment with identified public and private sector employers. The Cedar Riverside facility will be an opportunity center for all, with special outreach to diverse communities, including the East African community. The agreements are for a 4,996 square foot center on the street level of an existing mixed use building located at 515 15th Avenue, Minneapolis, and the County's sublease with partner organizations that will operate out of the center.

On April 12 the Hennepin County Board voted to approve the amended articles of incorporation for Community Action Partnership of Suburban Hennepin County (CAPSH). CAPSH works across suburban Hennepin County to improve the lives of low-income people. Late last year, CAPSH was designated by the Minneapolis City Council as the community action agency in the City of Minneapolis. CAPSH will now seek administrative approval of the expanded designation by the Minnesota Department of Human Services.
