Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek presented awards to more
than a dozen citizens for their contribution to public safety during a ceremony
in Brooklyn Park on October 28.
The
Sheriff presented the Distinguished Citizen Award to a Minneapolis man who coaches
soccer for 300 children. Coach Ahmed
Ismail (pictured in the back row, first person from the left) said that he has seen soccer transform the lives of some of his young
players. The coach also serves as a
mentor and he frequently brings youth to Sheriff’s Office events so they can
learn about their community.
Sheriff Stanek is among 130 police chiefs, sheriffs and prosecutors who launched
a new nationwide coalition with the goal of reducing the number of people in
America's prisons. The group is called Law Enforcement Leaders to Reduce Crime and Incarceration.
The coalition
believes unnecessary incarceration does not work to reduce crime, wastes
taxpayer dollars, damages families, and divides communities. The United
States currently has five percent of the world’s population and 25 percent of
its prisoners.
“I
have seen firsthand the consequences of locking up too many people for low-level offenses,” said Sheriff
Stanek. “I’m pleased to join
a group that is pushing for arrest-alternatives."
