Current project status

It has been a busy construction season for the crews on the project. We thought you would appreciate learning more about a few key construction accomplishments and getting an updated timeline for the work that remains.

Here are the details:

From Excelsior Boulevard to Mainstreet, crews are completing the final portion of the underground work (water, storm and sanitary mains). We anticipate having Shady Oak Road complete from Excelsior Boulevard to Highway 7 in time for winter, with the exception of the final layer pavement to be placed next year.

The Hopkins city streets (2nd Street, 21st Avenue and West Park Road) are complete. The final layer of pavement will be placed on 21st Avenue before winter. 2nd Street and West Park Road had the final layer of pavement placed last fall.

The cul de sac off Lake Street Extension cannot be completed until the traffic switch onto the new alignment at Highway 7. This area and the North Service Drive will be the last items completed.

The portion of Shady Oak Road north of Highway 7 should be open on the new alignment this fall.

Project background

Hennepin County, in partnership with the cities of Hopkins and Minnetonka, is reconstructing Shady Oak Road (County Road 61) from Excelsior Boulevard (County Road 3) to just north of Highway 7.

The project will add a travel lane in each direction, construct a sidewalk and a trail, realign the intersection with Highway 7, install a permanent traffic signal at Mainstreet and address flooding issues along the corridor.
