In accordance with a proclamation from the White House, Governor Walz directed all United States and Minnesota flags at state buildings to be flown at half-staff effective immediately until sunset on Monday, October 30, to remember, mourn, and honor the lives lost in the shooting in Lewiston, Maine, on Wednesday, October 25.
“Lewiston, Maine is a little smaller than Mankato, Minnesota. I can’t imagine the impact a mass shooting will have on that community,” said Governor Walz. “My office has offered Maine any resources they need, and Minnesotans offer our heartfelt condolences as Mainers grapple with our country’s latest violent, senseless tragedy.”
"The news of the mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine is horrific and unbearable. Tom and I are praying for the victims and their families. No community should live in fear of gun violence," said Lieutenant Governor Flanagan.
Individuals, businesses, and other organizations are also encouraged to join in lowering their flags.
Governor Walz stood alongside a group of state and local officials, emergency management leaders, and community partners to break ground on the new State Emergency Operations Center in Blaine.
The $41 million project will strengthen Minnesota’s ability to effectively prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies and disasters.
"In times of crisis, one of the best resources we have to protect Minnesotans is our dedicated team of emergency managers who coordinate with local, county, and federal partners," said Governor Walz. “The new State Emergency Operations Center will be the hub for state agencies and their partners to come together and prepare for and handle any emergencies that come our way. This is an investment in the safety of every community across the state.”
Governor Walz also kicked off a statewide tour at Saint Paul College to highlight proposed infrastructure projects ahead of the 2024 legislative session. The Governor will tour proposed infrastructure projects.
"We build our infrastructure plans with direct feedback from communities across Minnesota – and putting together our infrastructure plan for 2024 will look no different," said Lieutenant Governor Flanagan.
On Thursday, Lieutenant Governor Flanagan toured a farm in Southern Minnesota.
"Great to visit Jim and Debi Purfeerst’s farm in Faribault today during corn harvest season. As we gear up for next session, we’re hearing firsthand how we can continue to support farmers today and into the future," said Lieutenant Governor Flanagan.
